DC Suicide Squad

Joker sounds epic, but doesn't look that great. I'll just have to trust Jared Leto.

His ridiculous tattoos bother me. I can't imagine why the Joker would ever have such arbitrary and lame crap tattooed on himself. After sitting in the parlour chair for a few minutes you have to assume the spontaneous and in-the-moment giddiness of wanting 'Hahahahahahahaha' tattooed on your chest would quickly wear off. The Joker is all about being real, so spending hours getting large tattoos is too try-hard for him. I don't recall ever seeing a tatted up Joker in a comic book.

More surprised at how quickly a full trailer came out. Still another year before release.

I'm not too surprised. Suicide Squad is a worthless brand to the general populace, so Hollywood needs a lot of time to get the hype train moving at full speed. Missing out on Tom Hardy didn't make their lives easier.

I really hope the Joker isn't crap. He looks way too try hard thus far - extensive tattoos, that circular arrangement of knives, guns and bottles on the floor, a swan dive off a building to save Harley etc.

It's nothing more than a mild cause for concern at this point though. I'll try have faith that Jared Leto knows what he's doing.

Also, not the end of the world, but I'm disappointed that Margo Robbie isn't putting on a Harley Quinn accent. You'd think her ability to master an unusual accent, as shown in Wolf of Wall Street, would make her ideal for a Harley accent.

If Deadpool kills it in theatres it might give the confidence needed for Suicide Squad to also be rated R.

Angry DC Fans Have Started a Petition To Get Rid of Rotten Tomatoes

Well, it's been a heckuva day for comic geeks on the internet - after months and months of anticipation, the review embargo for Suicide Squad was lifted and....it was not pretty. As in, "mid-30% on Rotten Tomatoes" not pretty. As in, "Jared Leto's Joker is barely in the film and also sucks" not pretty. As in, "AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE SCENARIO FOR DC FILM FANS WHO HAD PINNED ALL OF THEIR HOPES ON THIS" not pretty.

It's the last point that's been reverberating through the internet since the reviews came out - the primary hub of DC film discussion-slash-blind optimism on the internet, r/DC_Cinematic has been in mild meltdown mode all day (although not really as bad as things were in March with Batman v. Superman) combined with a general sense of malaise that the first three films in the DC cinematic universe have all been met with critical disdain. Suicide Squad seemed like the film that would buck the trend - where Man of Steel and BvS were overly grim and humorless, Suicide Squad seemed fun and irreverent and, well, NOT directed by Zack Snyder.

And - just like with the backlash over Batman v. Superman - many are pointing fingers at critics (for being overly biased, Marvel fanboys, paid off by Marvel, or some combination thereof)...and even at RottenTomatoes (which is simply an aggregator of reviews). And while RottenTomatoes certainly has its share of issues (the binary "Fresh or Rotten" style doesn't leave much room for nuance or mixed opinions), a vocal subsection of DC fans have formally declared war with a Change.org petition to remove the site from the internet altogether.

Report: Warner Bros. Turned Suicide Squad Into a Mess in Its Panic Over BvS Criticism

The early reviews are in—and many are lambasting Suicide Squad for being a tonal mess. A new report released by The Hollywood Reporter today claims to have the answer as to how that came about, and it apparently has a lot to do with audiences’ less-than-stellar reaction to Batman v Superman.—and WB’s worried reaction to that.

The extensive report—sourced through comments from unnamed Warner Bros. insiders, so grain of salt, etc.—cites a bevy of stresses about the production of the movie, from an alleged rush to meet its August 2016 release date to a supposed concern about David Ayer’s ability to handle an effects-driven summer blockbuster.

But worries about the approach Ayer was taking with the film apparently got even more heated when Warner Bros. were blindsided by the vicious critical response to Batman v Superman earlier this year:
