DC Suicide Squad

The upheaval like that behind Warner Bros.'s DC team-up is becoming a staple of studi

"Better late than never." That was one Warner Bros. executive's reaction to the excitement at Suicide Squad's splashy Aug. 1 premiere in New York. Tracking indicates the film could open to more than $140 million domestic and potentially hand the studio its first unequivocal megahit since American Sniper's $547.4 million in December 2014. With March's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice grossing $873 million worldwide but failing to impress audiences or reach the hoped-for $1 billion mark, Warners still urgently needs to jump-start its critical DC Comics universe, raising the stakes for Suicide Squad, which cost at least $175 million to make.

Yet if the villain team-up ultimately works — and it has drawn some harsh early reviews — it will be in spite of the kind of behind-the-scenes drama that is becoming typical for giant franchise movies that now are the main focus of the studio business: a production schedule engineered to meet an ambitious release date; a director, David Ayer (Fury), untested in making tentpole movies; and studio executives, brimming with anxiety, who are ready to intercede forcefully as they attempt to protect a branded asset. Often, efforts to fix perceived problems ratchet up costs, which drive anxiety ever higher. In extreme cases, such as Fox's troubled Fantastic Four, the intervention is so aggressive that it becomes unclear what it means to be the director. (In each such case, studios are careful to stress that the credited director is on-scene and in charge, which is essential to avoid DGA issues. And the wise director plays along.)

So despite grueling moments, multiple editors and competing cuts, the production of Suicide Squad barely stands out in today's landscape. In a joint statement to THR, Ayer and Warners production president Greg Silverman say: "This was an amazing experience. We did a lot of experimentation and collaboration along the way. But we are both very proud of the result. This is a David Ayer film, and Warners is proud to present it."

Why Can’t DC’s Films Catch a Break?

Another DC film release, another onslaught of bad reviews. First, it was Man of Steel, then Batman v Superman, now Suicide Squad – and lest we forget, the animated films, too. Are DC’s films really as bad as the reviews say?

Personally, no. While DC’s recent efforts aren’t in the same league of The Dark Knight, the overall reaction (or overreaction) has been incredibly harsh. Appealing to reason here, is Batman v Superman, Man of Steel or Suicide Squad in your top 10 worst films of all time or even the worst films of the respective year? The media’s narrative seems to suggest so. No matter what DC does, the DCEU can’t catch a break – but why? Let’s look at three possible reasons....

Incredible logic from WB. "Our BvS meddling led to it being lambasted. Better meddle in Suicide Squad!"

Warner Bros needs to either hire "company directors" that will toe the line like Marvel, or they need to just take their hands off the creative directors that they have given their projects to.

Excuse me? The animated movies are almost always well received.

Watched Batman vs Superman the extended edition, I haven't seen the std edition. I have no idea what the criticism is about it was a brilliant movie! Didn't want it to end, Afflect was a brilliant Bat. I liked Man of Steel as well it wasn't too dark it was brilliant showed how the rest of society reacts to Superman and how that effects him, all past Superman movies showed things from Superman's point of view only.

Kark man, the Marvel movies are just pew pew superhero candy type movies and fans go gagga over them.
People just jumped on the bandwagon with BvS

Watched the premiere at Mall of Africa last night.
I liked it. Certainly not as bad as the 30% from rotten tomatoes.

Thought is was ok at best but then just realised how terrible it was when I watched the honest trailer.

Those guys are usually spot on.

Would be interested to see how the fans react to Suicide Squad.

Would've worked better as an R rated movie.

So much hype around this movie.
Cant wait to watch it

So you watched a movie and your opinion was that it was ok. But then when you watched someone else's opinion your opinion changed to match theirs?

This is what i'm talking about people are sheep.

Extended edition was better. The normal version was a mess. Still liked it, although Jesse Eisenberg made me want to pull my hair out

Not this most recent one...

Non DC comic readers did not take too well with the controversy which had come with The Killing Joke. I think that the hardcore DC ‘squad’ will appreciate the one-shot to movie adaption. WB did take a risk with the Batman-Batgirl development… At the end, the movie was targeted at a niche market.

Suicide Squad's messy tone is all down to studio panic and last-minute changes

Based on the general critical consensus Suicide Squad isn't quite the funtime caper we were expecting. A messy tone, inconsistent editing and questionable villainy are some of the reasons cited by reviewers for this latest entry into the DC Extended Universe. Those issues could have stemmed from the highly-publicized reshoots earlier this year, but according to a report from THR troubles began when writer-director David Ayer was given a mere six weeks to pen the script. That's surely a major concern for a studio trying to reclaim its stake in comic book cinema, right?

Yet the shoot continued and more problems arose...

...

Nevertheless, "multiple" editors were brought in to tinker and this tactic resulted in two different cuts of the film screened for test audiences: Ayer's original version and a "a lighter, studio-favored" version. Feedback from those previews led to the studio and Ayer reaching “a very common-ground place” which basically means they decided to MERGE these two alternate versions. Now that's not simply a matter of cueing up both films in Final Cut Pro and splicing away. It meant millions of dollars was spent on additional shooting.

According to another source it mostly came about because Warner's CEO was "really pissed about damage to the brand" caused by the poor critical response towards Batman v Superman. And so for Suicide Squad, efforts were focused on making a less dour, more madcap mainstream summer flick that appealed to a broader audience...

No, my opinion changed when certain things that I glanced over in the movie were made more glaring.
I was already polarised toward it being average just needed 1 or 2 additions to confirm it.

Fair enough, that's why I don't watch trailers or reviews for movies I want to see... my opinion(on all matters) should be the only one that matters. - Donald Trump

Okay that was me but I had you going for a moment didn't I? :crylaugh:

If you enjoyed it, then you enjoyed it, don't let anyone else change that for you.

I caught a few minutes of what looked like a ten minute trailer a few days back.

It seemed to suck balls.
