I gots a problem.

A few days ago my USB ports decided to go on strike. After some investigating I found out that the drivers uninstalled themselves. I loaded them back up, and nothing changed. I reinstalled SP1 and SP2, and still nothing.

The problem I suspect is that it's a virus that's somehow restricting power to the ports so that when I plug in a device (flash disk, external HDD or even my Sony Ericsson), it doesn't get picked up. My pc doesn't even make that sound that Windows usually plays when it picks up a device or when one is removed.

Any suggestions or ideas would be very welcome. I'm hoping somebody has had this problem before and that it's not my mobo that's dying on me.

BTW I'm using Avast, but not able to update it for a while since that PC doesn't have net access yet, and it's not really possible to update it using a flash disk (ha, ha).

Cheers

I had the same recently on a Asus board. Apparently that was a particular trait of the board. When I disabled the ports in Bios it worked for a while, minus USB, and one morning. Poo, no boot and gone was the South Bridge. A priced board I should say.

crap. I'm certain mine's an asus too. will confirm when I finish lectures today. Was thinking of getting a PCI-E usb port for the mobo but now not so sure. Still holding thumbs that it's a virus.

Check the registry while you're at it. Go to
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
-SYSTEM
-CurrentControlSet
-Services
-usbstor
-Start(3) <-- 4 means it's disabled, change it to 3

Check your latest Windoze updates too. Some updates play havoc with USB drivers.
I unistalled the last 2 updates and re-installed chipset drivers and all seems ok again.

btw. I'm running an Intel board, so looks like it might not be ASUS.

Google is your friend. Google Asus P4P800 and USB failures and learn. BTW it is my first ever Asus board failure and I suspect a falied USB cable that did me in.

Well I just checked the registry. all is fine there. switched the voltages on my usb ports to what looks like 5VSB instead of just 5V. nothing yet... btw mine is an ASUS M2NPV-MX board. Weird thing is the light on my bluetooth dongle still flashes when plugged in so I'm thinking it's a windows prob. Will try google a bit. Oh and will reinstall the mobo drivers but sceptic about that.
