So I screwed up and recommended afrihost to 2 clients for cloud hosting.

Now I look like a tard since their cloud boxes are virtually useless.

Anybody have a suggestion for something that works ?

Do the servers have to be located in South Africa? Have you considered Rackspace?

For our current South African clients we recommend products based out of our UK data center.

I asked you guys before if you would ever get a SA CDN or data center before :/ I want to host locally(int ping is 180ms and does go slow when cables break) so I went with EliteHost(not cloud unfortunately openvz) but reasonably priced and excellent service and unlimited bandwidth for a local company!

Not sure what your problem is with Afrihost. I've got several cloud servers with them, never had a major problem, certainly no more than I've had with any other South African hosting provider.

Hi KoeksGHT,

We have a few local Akamai CDN endpoints in South Africa, no local data center at the moment.

root@pvt4:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 2 MB in 3.17 seconds = 645.92 kB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 4 MB in 3.93 seconds = 1.02 MB/sec

Reading from MEMORY is the same speed as a 4x CDROM

Vm on my laptop:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 15698 MB in 1.98 seconds = 7933.79 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 758 MB in 3.00 seconds = 252.53 MB/sec

$5 VPS in Amsterdam:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 12260 MB in 2.00 seconds = 6135.19 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 842 MB in 3.00 seconds = 280.50 MB/sec

Which cloud package do you have?

Hi Encrypted,

Are you looking for Cape Town based servers and what are your requirements?

Tend to find the local DC's go down more often than the cables break...

True, but the speed difference when viewing databases locally is almost instant where my overseas vps takes a good few seconds to load.

Just gotta be patient I guess, its only 130ms more

/I swear these types of threads pick up on automated keyword searches by these hosting companies, otherwise they sit in the category pressing F5 frantically :D

Afrihost's support is awesome, their(MTN's) network is awesome, their disks - not so much, they need to mount them from a SAN. Although, they're using VMWare.
I average 50MB/s writes.

DigitalOcean is also awesome, but international. I have no idea what they're using.
I average 260MB/s writes.

Elitehost is also awesome, although I don't host with them.
On a "similar" setup with OpenVZ, I get about 125MB/s writes on VMs. Elitehost's should near +200MB/s, since they probably have a much better disk configuration than me.

I never actually performance test memory... I've never had a bottleneck because of memory. :\
If someone really needs speed, go metal with RAID 5. Hetzner is probably the best for that, with their Commerce machine.
