Decided Not To Replace Cambelt (Ford Figo)

I was quoted R7200 for the 100k cambelt service from Ford Imperial Cape Town in early 2017. I ended up going to an independent for the full service with cambelt and tensioner + all the other belts, water pump and coolant. It ended up being R4200 with all Ford parts besides Shell synthetic oil.

The additional belts are really expensive as they are stretch belts.

It was 1hr labour.

It would have been around to R10k had Ford done it with the additional belts and waterpump.

All the other belts? These days its only two belts on most cars?

I have an old MAZDA drifter DB 2500 , I was told to have the Cambelt changed at 100 000km, which I have not done .... Now at 128 500 , still going strong,

Might do it next service...

Cambelt/timing belt. On my first car I learned the importance of changing it when your mechanic recommends it. Oh well. School fees paid. I learned a lot about engines very quickly. I actually think there was a slight improvement in the engine performance.

Don't replace your cam belt man, its a conspiracy to get your money, cambelts can easily last 500 000km

*Sly21C believes anything he reads online that isn't mainstream thinking
It could probably if you're lucky, but that's taking a big risk.

Have them check it, most allow visual inspection but in my older cards we used to consider cambelt changes at 120k service. You were pushing it beyond that.

There usually is a replacement period but it's much much higher in the mileage range than a cambelt.

So just refusing to have it replaced because it's a chain can leave you looking like a fool on a dealers floor. I am just asking because the general notion I've seen on the internet is the 'don't touch me on my chain' and nothing else.

Most dealers don't work on extreme and worst case conditions, hence when they say to you replace it at this interval it does not necessarily mean the belt was just about to snap into pieces. I

If it's a diesel, only needs to be replaced at 250k iirc.

All circumstancial.

If a dealer is trying to fleece you by trying to do it much earlier than it should be then I would object as well.

It's a MUCH more expensive job than a cambelt in most cases.

Also chains give you an audible indication that its time to change it, remember the pulleys wear off before the chain does, but if you break a chain its expensive to fix

guys remember back in the days when you popped out the distributor cap and turned the key to see if the rotor spinned............those were simple times :D

One of the things I check when buying a used car is if the cambelt was serviced on time. Unless you get yours done soon you are greatly reducing your resale value.

So whats yours view on the ford lifetime cambelt on the new ecoboost engines? they claim it will last the life of the car ?

Check the debacle about kuga payouts, they mentioned that the life expected from the kuga is 150 000km... thats how they calculated the settlements...

Dont know where you get your facts from. The belt on my Ecoboost engine is scheduled for replacement at 100 000 kms.
