Default Network Connection

Hi Guys, another thing I need help with please.

My Win 7 Ultimate machine is connected to my Router (WITHOUT INTERNET) with a LAN Cable and I also have a CellC Modem Connected directly to my machine via USB.

Now here's the Q. How do I tell my PC to use my CellC connection for Internet, because it doesn't work, however the moment I unplug the LAN Cable it works perfectly, but when I insert the LAN Cable again I can't access the web because it is trying to use the LAN Connection to the Router.

Your routing table is to blame for this :)

If you have your LAN cable plugged in, and plug in your CellC device (connected), it will add the internet route as default to the top of the routing table.
The same applies if you have your CellC device connected and connect your LAN cable... the default route will be via your LAN cable.

You can simply edit your routing table to fix this.
 
How do I edit the routing table?

I have found this

route ADD xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx MASK xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Means:

route ADD “network” MASK “subnet mask” “gateway ip”


So how do I go about it.

Its a simple fix...

First assign a static IP and subnet mask to your "Local Area Connection"... leave the Default Gateway, Preferred & Alternate DNS blank..

then when you connect you 3G connection it will use that Gateway.

Thank You very very much! Just shows how little I know about networks!!

Everything working perfectly now.
 
Till there is an IP conflict or a change in the network :P (this can be mitigated by leaving the DNS servers intact)
This would also screw with Active Directory authentication et al
So while workable it's less than ideal,Route Add is the best solution,add a default LAN route that is persistent,then add a second internet route for any other traffic
