Defective New Scirocco R

The Barlow group are the owners of the Barons dealerships. I suggest you find out the details of the CEO of Barlow Motor and let him in on your plight.

I think VW is dropping the ball with the quality of their cars these days.

I've opened the case with the NCC (National Consumer Commission) on Friday. They work in conjuction with MIOSA (Ombudsman). One of the stipulations in the MIOSA application form is that if I go the legal route they will have to bow out as the battle then continues with my lawyer and VWSA.

I've now emailed all the popular car magazines in SA and the Volkswagen Group CEO. If anybody is in a similar situation They can use the email addresses below. I'll try to find the Barloworld Group CEO's email and post it up here once I've sent the email as well. Thanks for the suggestion Sean008.

... And every brand in SA has the same attitude.

My friend's dad bought his wife a new RAV4 last month. At 750km, he noticed a small oil leak, which turned out to be a defective seal somewhere in the gearbox. Toyota said that no damage would have resulted, but he requested a replacement vehicle. They agreed to provide a replacement vehicle. As soon as the correct model and colour is available, it is his. They fixed the seal issue, and they are driving the original vehicle while they wait for the new one.

That's proper service.

O, when the car went in to determine what was causing the leak, he requested a car for the weekend, as they were going away. He said that he does not want a vehicle older than the one he just bought. So they gave him a RunX from the floor, with something like 10km on the clock, for the weekend.

Shot Bru. I see ur in my hometown. Pm if u need any moral support or an assistant assassin ! Good luck.

I would recommend getting and OBDII ELM327 tool and seeing what the error is. I did the same for my old Astra because the check engine light can come one for a multitude of reasons. Some are serious and could indicate imminent catastrophic failure, others can merely result in your fuel economy not being as good as it should.

To give you an example, I have the check engine light coming on every now and then in the old car but the error is for a fuel evaporation recirculation valve not working properly. To fix it on an old car like that is not worth the money so I occasionally clear the error when I check if there is any other ones logged.

So bottom line is check the error yourself, it is very easy these days.

Edit : This is what you should get, they can be had for less than R300

All good and well, but why should he, the car is new, and he paid an absolute fortune for it.
This is the same as telling me OK I bought a new house but now I have to call in an expert to find out why the toilet is perpetually blocked, bypassing the snag list sent to the builder.

Here is why I would do it.
Firstly to give me piece of mind that the car is not going to blow up and then I sit with an even bigger problem.
Secondly so I can ask around and find out how much it would cost to have the problem fixed.
Thirdly to take this evidence to the dealer and having something concrete to force them to take action and lastly, this is VWSA you are dealing with.
They have some of the highest sales volumes in South Africa and therefore they routinely ignore problems like this (I have pointed that out ad infinitum). So your only choice really is to DIY.

Another option is to write to Noseweek. They've recently had a field day with Mercedes, and got some closure for one client.

I would say the quality of the car is in question as much as decent after sales support to find what is probably a very minor issue.

It's the manner in which they are handling it which is shocking. And if I had this much trouble with a new car I would also want a new one.

Then there's that Aussie dude in the US who had the same experience with a brand new Porsche and that car had a hell of a lot more issues. If he didn't do his Youtube thing and got the bad publicity he did then he would probably still be fighting for a new one.

Well I just got off the phone with the VW CIC and this case has been escalated to the Managing Directors office. It has become a "sensitive matter" now... social media helps. The NetStar guys have scheduled an appointment with Barons to remove the tracking device for tomorrow morning.

VW is waiting for the tracking device to be removed as the result will determine which route this will go.

The core reason I'm not interested in repairing this car further is because unnecessary repairs have been carried out on the car. I'm generalising but I dont trust anything that has been opened up after manufacture, its never the same afterward. Another concern is that the engine has been running lean from day one. Do a quick google on what damage can be caused by a turbo engine running lean for more info. I dont want to be sitting with problems later on. I've wasted enough time as it is on this car.

@Koosi, thanks for the Noseweek suggestion. I'll drop them an email now.

Does the CPA not apply to new vehicles? 6 months for repair, refund or replace? It certainly applies to second hand vehicles..

The tracking unit should not affect the rest of the car. Unlike diagnostics tools tracking units that sit on ODBII or tap in to the CAN bus are listen only devices and will not modify any of the cars settings or messaging.

That being said I completely understand how you feel and think its best if you just walk away from the car (and hopefully the brand). While this kind of thing can potentially happen to any car the biggest concern is how the manufacturer handles the situation.

Tracking devices with CAN, use a "pick-up", on the CAN pair. This means they are not electrically connected to the CAN BUS. That is, AFAIK the only manufacturer-approved way.

Disgusting service. I agree, i would want a replacement.

Correct, they have two wires that pick-up CAN and from there on its up to the tracking device to filter out what they require from CAN.

I know two people that had cars replaced by VW. One, a Golf was driven round the Mid Rand area with the list of faults on it. VW soon contacted him and replaced the vehicle.

The other was an Audi Quatro that had body flex that kept shattering the windscreen. Replaced after the third windscreen shattered.

So Mr Rouxenator, which tracking company do you work for?

I've had my engine replaced by VW. Took about a year for them to admit to the problem and eventually replace it (Its shocking how dumb the agents think you are).

Good luck though, will spread your story and hopefully you get a full refund. or at least a new car.
