Defy 5kg Tumble Dryer

Does anybody here have this tumble dryer?

Our clothes do not dry properly/fast enough during the winter and rainy days and I can see how frustrating it is for my wife.

Want to surprise her with a tumble dryer befre the weekend.

Makro has it on special for R1999.00. Looks like an alright buy but I have no experience on these appliances.

She will use it once or twice a week and we are only two in the house. So it won't take loads and loads at a time. Just jeans and golf shirts.
 
I've got that one, or one very much like it. My biggest gripe is that it doesn't vent outside but rather through the front door so it gets very hot and humid in the laundry room. So much that the paint has pealed like mad and will soon need replacing.

Weather permitting I like to line dry as much as possible and then transfer the clothes to the dryer with a dryer sheet to finish the job.
 
They Defy ones are a pretty old/stable design, the internals have stayed the same for years all they do is give the exterior a facelift. If anything ever goes wrong with it (not that it does) spares are cheap & easy to come by.

They work fine but like bwana said they vent through the front door which is nice if your legs are cold :D

We also prefer to use a line but we can only hang the stuff on the line over weekends because our line is in the front courtyard of our unit in the complex and there has been lots of complaints about clothing stolen from the line when nobody is at home.

The last week in Gauteng has also been horribly cold and wet, so you can imagine how long it takes for jeans to dry. It's actually been a problem right through the year.

I would think she will put the dryer in the little laundry section of our kitchen and I can only imagine how hot it will get in there if she does that. If I buy it I will try and convince her to put it in the garage.

Not a bad idea. . . if she goes for it. :)

Every 12-18 months I have to open up the back of the thing and remove wads of lint because it stops working. Apart from that it's pretty much hassle free.

I have the 2001 version of that dryer and it still works fine.
Also have the 2001 Defy dishwasher and also working fine.

I have - they're old, so I've moved them from their kennels into the laundry room.
 
I rented a flat once with Defy appliances, also this particular tumble dryer. Like bwana said, it just vents in the laundry or where ever you place the thing. I wasn't able to use mine in the laundry section in the kitchen (probably similar to what you have) as everything got moist like crazy. The whole living room walls were dripping wet, I am not exaggerating.

I would NEVER buy any Defy product. Rather save up a little bit more and buy a proper product with decent ventilation. In my new flat I had Bosch appliances. The tumble dryer put all the moisture in a tank, no moisture in the room whatsoever. Do yourself a huge favour and get one with water tank. If you really want to buy the Defy you HAVE to put it in the garage, you will see.
 
Thanks for the responses so far.

Seems like a good buy at R1999.00, especially for the amount of times we will be using it.

I won't lie, I'm a bit concerned about the heat/moisture problem if she is going to insist(very likely) on putting it in the house instead of the garage.
I will have a look around for something more decent to compare it to. Any suggestions?

Nothing wrong with Defy, it's a very reliable brand.

I suspect the moisture thing is mostly a problem inland or where you keep your doors closed. Have not experienced the moisture issue but here in KZN the air is naturally damp :D

If you are not keen on Defy then maybe look at the 9kg Whirlpool they have for R4000.

I lived in a penthouse right next to the sea in the Cape, naturally there is a lot of wind and when all windows were open it was fine. However, in winter or when it was raining or when it was too windy to keep the windows open I wasn't able to use it. The brand might be more or less reliable but the major issue is the moisture. It entirely depends on his situation whether he would be happy with it.
 
Like I said. I have no experience on these things. Never had one growing up or owned one of my own.

So I am going purely on responses here. Will just wait and see if other people also have the moisture problem. The heat is not that big a problem, especially in winter. Could actually serve a dual purpose.
 
That's what Defy says:

The tumble dryer should be placed in a well-ventilated area. If the Dryer is operated in a confined space, moisture extracted from the clothing during the drying process will condense on the walls.
 
Tumble dryers are mostly 2 types...venting and condensing.

The condensing ones extract the moisture to a water container that must be emptied. They cost quite a bit more.

The venting ones coming in varying designs include front, side and rear venting.

If you get one with a side or rear port and place it against an external wall, you can drill a hole through and using extractor aluminium tubing, vent it outside.

Nothing wrong with DEFY they are now owned by Swiss company Franke. An entry level Bosch can be had for about R2300, side venting.
 
Another issue is that dryers can sometimes shrink clothes. Not cool.

Haha. I just imagined my "fat" ass in a tight pair of jeans.

Let me also ask this. How true is it that you don't need to iron clothes that were tumble dried? Would make my wife's life even more easier if she doesn't need to iron my formal shirts.
 
Only if you take the clothes straight out of the dryer once the cycle has completed. And immediately hang/fold the clothing items

Your jeans will shrink a bit but there's nothing like warm toasty jeans :D They go back to normal size after a few minutes of wear/stretching.
