Depression.

Wow!

  • S3: Vitamin D3 > 500IU per day. I don't understand how this will work. Will you still be able to buy vitamin D3 without a prescription provided you don't buy more than the equivalent of 30 x 500 IU per month?
  • S4: Fish oils (if used for high blood fat levels). I don't understand how this will work. Will you still be able to buy fish oil off the shelf, but if you want to use it to treat cholesterol, you need a script? Is the pharmacist going to make you pinky promise that you don't intend using it for cholesterol reduction if you don't have a script?
  • S5: 5-HTP. This I agree with. To my knowledge, 5-HTP can cause heart valve damage because of how it increases serotonin levels in the blood.

acute S3 is still OTC however vitD is fat soluble and high doses will allow it to build up in the body. Hence it has to be supervised with chronic use and falls under S3 where most chronic meds are.

Fish oils is a technicality no one can stop you from buying it OTC

serotonin is S5 because carelessly boosting it can be very dangerous and result in serotonin syndrome and some other nasty things.

You know, this is a perfect example of how idiotic the people in our government is. It's more dose related than anything else. The Vitamin D I buy come in bottles of 120. If you use that as directed it will last 4 months. Nobody honestly beliefs that anyone who knows anything about Vitamin D will take only one pill per day.

Tryptophan I haven't heard of any bad effects in large doses. We get grams of it in our diet. They seem to be thumb sucking these figures. 5-HTP can cause serotonin syndrome but the effect is mostly with the combination of serotonin increasing medication. To classify some of these as S5 while blood pressure medication and antibiotics are S3 is ridiculous. People should just RTFM that comes with medication rather than falling under a nanny state. This reeks of the pharmaceutical industry having a hand in it.

which one you buy exactly? and from where?

while blood pressure medication and antibiotics are S3

chronic medications are s3 so that its legal to allow one extra month of medication OTC so that therapy is not disrupted because you couldnt get an appointment or practioner went on holiday or whatever reason. Imagine what would happen if a diabetic had no insulin because the doctor was unavailable to write the script ? ... they use their brains

antibiotics are S4 btw
This reeks of the pharmaceutical industry having a hand in it.

 ... ok global pharmaceutical companies take the effort to control 190 odd countries health laws .... ok

Tryptophan is in dosages of less than 5mg/kg. How they're going to know how much you weigh is a mystery though. This is probably one that's not enforceable. 5-HTP however is now treated as some dangerous substance.

I think 5-HTP may be dangerous. From a theoretical standpoint at least, it may damage your heart valve. Google this, it's scary.

You guys panic too much. You must keep in mind severe/chronically depression people have NO life when in a state of depression. Some of these things may have scary side effects and may be high scheduled but keep in mind that they provide millions of people with a quality lifestyle.

For those these (as they refer to them) "happy pills" are life saving. Its easy to comment the cons when you dont have these conditions or mild form of this condition.

Yea look you have a valid point and we can use that acne drug as a fine example of how meds with bad side effects can help people because the sides are better than the depression/acne.

I saw a documentary or read an article saying some people are born without certain brain functions and drugs cannot help them, nothing actually can. I think it might have been a bbc article i will look it up.

yes these are the most severe form. Unfortunately medicine has not elucidated how the brain works sooo ..... its extremely difficult

The last week or two it feels as though life has lost its colour for me. I feel exhausted. Everything feels like so much effort. Since Monday I've felt like dying, except (a) I don't have a gun with which to kill myself, and (b) I'm scared of the unknown (what happens when you die?).

I don't know if I'm just going through a temporary bad patch and if I should brave it out, or if I should go to a doctor and ask them to prescribe me Zoloft again.

Well, I'm back on my meds.

All you folk who reckon it's possible to just think your way out of clinical depression? Well, you're idiots, sorry.

If the meds are the right thing for you atm then its good you are back on them. Only you can really tell if they are or not.
I have heard though that no amount of positive thought can fix clinical depression.

I used Effexor for about 3 years and found it to be very effective. Most days I felt happy enough to dance around but had no clue or reason to have felt that way.

Clinical depression is not something to mess around with. Good for you and I hope that you feel better soon.

I know you wanted to do it without meds, but yea, sometimes you just can't. Stay strong :) and don't care about the idiots.
