Depression.

Just for curiosity sake, how many people have tried Vitamin D for their depression?

Well you drink it, unless it's from the sun. So have you tried it?

Vit D is simply exposure to Sunlight. Up in the North people get depressed because they get seasonal affective disorder during the long cold dark winters with no sun - not so here so Vit D is not necessary to supplement as we have it in abundance. It doesn't help depression in SA unless you never see the light of day.

Plenty of people in sunny countries test deficient. It has little to do with where you are and everything with habits. Heck even people that swear at being sun worshipers test low. Even in sunny SA this time of year vitamin D can only effectively be produced between 10am and 2pm. Now it in any case depends on having optimal levels of vitamin D like people with a traditional lifestyle would have e.g. traditional farming, and not just normal levels by todays standards.

Funny how people would mock something natural with virtually no chance of adverse effects and with a lot of benefits.

Yes 200-400 IU of extra D2 per day. Those guidelines were based on a value of 200 IU in infants to prevent Rickets and 400 IU in elderly to prevent osteomalacia and osteoporosis, though it has had little effect on the prevalence of osteoporosis unless coupled with a calcium supplement. It's no wonder then that countries with a lack of sunlight where fortification is common still have a prevailing deficiency.

Some of those have gone over to D3 (particularly milk) but all studies where supplementation has had an effect used >1,000 IU. Studies using 500 IU show little or no effect. It's these studies that opponents usually latch on to in order to show that Vitamin D shows no benefit but advocates have routinely acknowledged that these amounts will not show any benefits. Just as we've acknowledged that D2 offers no benefit and is in fact toxic while having a half life as short as 1 week. This would explain why many taking 50kIU of prescription D2 complain it only works for a week.

Fears of toxicity has also been unfounded:

Not specifically, no. Although I generally take multivitamins, and spend time in the sun.

You can't buy the strong stuff over the counter any more, you have to ask for it. I guess that might be a clue to if it works. To get the right amount you have to spend 15 minutes a day with you skin in the sun.

Oh by the way , combining the right amount of vita d 1000 IU and 400mg calcium works like a fat trapper, if you are constipated it kinda lubes your poop. :o and it aids weight loss.

Cilift. Why?

just curious

Swa vitD doesnt cure depression. You cant go suggesting VitD for every pathology.

Some people have chronic depression it cant be cured. Its an insult to imply it can

Yeah our medicines control council should get their heads out of their arses. 500IU are for babies.

FYI my severe depression is 90% better since taking Vitamin D. But it has to be high dose. The pharmaceutical companies controlling our health care just won't acknowledge that having optimal levels takes care of a lot of ailments. After all why should they when everyone can just pop a patented pill to "cure" [-]symptoms[/-] ailments.

Multivitamins is a scam, eat properly. Fresh foods, fruit, veggies and you won't need multivitamins.

I eat fairly well, and while I am not going to get into an argument about vitamins, I went to the chemist a couple months ago with persistent sores around the corners of my mouth. When I asked what might help they said 'vitamin supplement'.

I was pretty skeptical, and presto! Within a week, totally cleared up.

My point is that multivitamins are not a scam - They can assist if you are lacking in something. I'm sure there are certain vitamins which are not best taken in that form, or don't work at all (I've no idea), but they can certainly have an effect.

I'm all for eating all your vitamins if you can, but I doubt many people can manage that exclusively.

I wouldn't call them a scam. Most however contain sub-optimal amounts which are of little benefit so people who are not deficient in anything can ignore them. My advice for anyone would be to find out what deficiency they have and treat that specifically. Sores at the corners of the mouth are indicative of a B-vitamin deficiency.

Spot on, just what they said.

Although, after doing a bit of reading, there were some suggestions of an extra iron supplement, which I did, and the combo worked perfectly to clear up the issue.

As it happens, I think they are coming back (the mouth sores), and I have not had my vits for a month or two.
