It's sad that people who suffer from this condition are made to feel that they must defend and prove their illness. I do not have depression , but my husband and another family member do. Both of them, when they were diagnosed, had no history of drug or alcohol abuse, no money worries, good jobs and spouses that adored them.
At one time, I too thought that depression was just a mind over matter thing. Eat healthy, exercise, quit smoking, meditate, think happy thoughts and you'll be fine...yeah, it doesn't always work that way. Some people, not everyone, need antidepressant medication to cope.
As to antidepressants being placebos, I don't agree. There are different types of depression and different types of antidepressants. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another. What works at one time might not work the next time you have a depressive episode. One medication might work, while the same medication in a generic form might not. Switching from cipralex to the generic lexamil had my husband feeling crappy again with the irritability and the constant headaches returning...and he didn't even know he'd been taking the much cheaper generic version of escitalopram. Thankfully those deep, overwhelming and all-consuming feelings of unhappiness have not made a reappearance.
It's high time people stopped being ignorant and narrow minded when it comes to depression...and I am not talking about feeling depressed because money is tight or you're having a bad day or you have relationship problems. DEPRESSION is a real DISEASE. Eating healthy and exercising won't get rid of a person's cancer, neither will it get rid of a person's depression. I'm not sure whether major depression can be cured, but I know that it can be managed.
