Depression.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have had quite remarkable success with perspective changes emanating from moderate doses of psilocybin mushrooms. They are, honestly, just about magic, in my experience.

*smiles* I'm happy to see you are doing well :)

You will almost certainly not find a professional providing therapy involving 100% illegal drugs, for obvious reasons.

Ketamine, on the other hand - There are definitely professionals offering this in Cape Town.

And yes, as mentioned, if you are going to try any of this yourself, do NOT take any of these substances lightly.

Brief update:

I'm moving out of a very toxic and unsettling living situation on Saturday into my own little nest, where all I have to worry about is, well, whatever responsibilities I have decided to take on. And it has fibre! Whoo!

Next step after making my move is getting on top of work issues and related stresses, and just figuring out how to have some more damned fun in this strange life we are thrust into.
Im glad the shrooms have been helping! Are you microdosing or what dose and frequency?

So it's been a while.

I weaned myself off my anti-depressants about a month ago. I felt like my life is in a much better place than when I started taking them so it should be better now if I go off it... and I'm an emotional wreck.

I fight with my fiancée constantly about little things. There's just so much stuff going on right now. We're looking for a house to buy. We're both studying. The cat is sick. We're getting married in Feb. None of our parents have saved for retirement so that'll be on us (mostly SO's parents) to care for them.

We're trying to lose weight and be fit. But I've been so grumpy due to an ear infection that we haven't been to gym in like a month.

I've decided to talk to a doctor tomorrow and go back on them. I was taking Serdep and I'm considering going into an SNRI now.

So I'm looking for advice regarding this. SSRI vs SNRI?

One of the reasons for going off in the first place is the low sex drive, but after going off, I've been so moody, that sex isn't even an interest for me.

I just want to be less angry again, even if it means less sex. I'm definitely not doing well currently :(

Sorry to hear you're not feeling happy @Akasha :crying:, you should be in a good place planning your wedding and so on.

You sound as if your nerves are in shreds so definitely go back onto meds and settle yourself down.

SSRI. If you are going to mess around with your brain chemistry, you want to be disrupting only as many neurotransmitters as necessary using medication at the lowest possible effective dose.

A month isn’t enough time for your brain to wean, be patient with yourself.

Medication for depression was long viewed as taboo, and granted historical use was a bit hit and miss. But these days they tend to have it bang on and it can work wonders. From what i know from friends on them though, drinking too much alcohol with them is a no-no.

When you say you're going to see a doctor, is it a GP or is it a specialist psychiatrist? Please see a psychiatrist if possible. Medications have improved so much but your best chance of getting meds that will work for you is honestly to see a psychiatrist.

I've started dosing myself with herbal supplements to relieve stress and anxiety.

This is because I noticed that my low moods tended to come after periods of high stress and/or anxiety. So, my thinking was, if I don't get so stressed, I might not get as depressed.

I still have magic mushrooms and I still microdose. But, I don't think mushrooms help you deal with stress and anxiety. I think they just... make you a bit happier, more creative maybe, but I'm not sure whether they enhance your ability to deal with stress.

The thing is, from having done a bit of research, the problem is that if you buy such a supplement in tablet or capsule form, they don't do anything. This is because they either don't have what they claim to have, or they do, but not enough of it.

In these capsules which you buy, they tend to use weak extracts to save money. So they get to tick a box saying that the capsules has got say ashwagandha in it, but you don't get enough of the active ingredient in ashwagandha for it to help. This is why I started making my own capsules. My daily anti stress anti anxiety dose is 3 x 1g capsules. Yes, 3000mg per day of herbal supplements. But, it seems to work. I feel better.

My blend has got:
Lion's mane
Rhodiola rosea
Ashwagandha
Magnolia
Bacopa monnieri
Ginger
L-Theanine

All of the above, apart from L-Theanine which is just an amino acid, are included in the capsules as strong extracts, the strongest I could find. So I get a lot of the active ingredients.

I contacted Discovery healthy company and spoke to a psychiatrist on the phone. He suggested I start taking meds again since I still have some left over from when I stopped. He also advised me to apply for PMB stuff so I can see someone professionally for a few visits when it gets difficult.

He said it sounds like a chemical imbalance and the best way to handle it is to go back on the meds

I was completely unaware that a disorder that requires a psychologists intervention was as simply and paltry as seasonal allergies.
Psychiatrists, a psychologist cannot prescribe meds at all, though they can ask a normal GP to.
