Dicing drivers kill 5 in one day.

The laughable part is that most of these idiots also put spoilers etc on their vehicles and then have to drive around the neighbourhood at 20km/h as they do not want to risk scrapping their little treasured possessions on the speed bumps or damage their low profile tyres on the pot holes. Stupid I tell you, just stupid.

And we can't have them damaging the neon tubes under the vehicle either.

Why can't they just put fur on the dashboard, an eight track tape, an orange on the aerial and a nodding dog at the back like the old days.

Probably the same reason that runners do sprints, swimmers do laps, rugby players play rugby, F1, etc ,etc.

The first three involve natural ability. In fact I'd even state that the fourth does too, certainly more than it takes to drive a street car at high speed on a public road. Hell even I can push my foot on the accelerator on my car and go really fast. It does not take much ability.

The point still remains that you are not in any way showing off any talent or ability you have but rather how much money you can piss on your vehicle. And even then it is only saying to the rest of us that you really do not have that much money otherwise you would be able to afford to buy yourself a proper sports car!

EDIT : And because you appear to be missing my point I will clarify further. Why do people do it? I would presume because they have the view that it is cool. Is it actually because it is illegal that it appeals? A little like smoking behind the sheds at school. You know you shouldn't but you think it makes you a big deal to do so. The problem is when you grown up you realised how stupid it really was.

If I am totally off the mark then feel free to provide some clarity to us who do not see the point.

Which is done on a track, pool, field, track... not in or on public access areas.

Cyclist, runner, etc.

I wasn't debating where it was done - I was answering why people do it.

Why do people hunt?
Why do people scuba dive.

Its a stupid question - the people who do it have a reason - just because you don't understand it doesn't make it 'stupid'.

Go to a track day - try your hand against someone who's been doing it for awhile (with a similiar car) - and then tell me it doesn't require much ability.

What makes it stupid is when it threatens the lives of others. Rather like practicing javelin inside the Waterfront Mall.

Exactly... but it doesn't make the actual sport itself stupid... its done at tracks as well (1/4 mile) - and I can tell you now those guys wouldn't exactly take kindly to it being called a stupid sport - same as the javelin guys wouldn't like it being called a stupid sport because a couple of retards through javelin guys toss their poles around in malls.

We are clearly talking about street racing here! You keep flipping the argument over to track racing. Track racing is controlled, timed and fair. Street racing is for idiots. You appear to be the one who is lumping the two into the same basket so perhaps the track racers should take offence at your insinuations!

As far as I know there isn't a law saying you can't turn the vehicle around and reverse at 120km/h on a highway either.

Most street cars are front wheel drive and we all know that driving in reverse with a front wheel car at 120 km/h is a really bad idea. I think that would classify as reckless driving. :D

this is turning into a modding cars/racing is stupid thread, whilst i think is is dangerous, the issue of drivers under the influence (drugs or alcohol) has a much higher risk attached (and is far more common) to it than some illegal drag racing.

it could be argued that the event here would not have even occurred had the two drivers been sober...

driving under the influence is enemy number 1, mod'd cars are far, far down the line....

Nope I think they idiots, all racers who drink and drive, take drugs and drive are just asking for trouble!!
I can also imagine street racing in Soweto... lots of drunk people many spectators going crazy for the cars. In that sort of environment its just asking for trouble...
Street racing is dangerous I agree but only when its a bunch of idiots showing off and being stupid. It also happened in Woodmead couple of years ago... father and son were killed, why take your kids to an event that has no control and is obviously dangerous??
I race alot, but we all have some sort of respect for other racers when we in our cars, when we out of the cars we can show off!! :p
Also a celeb is involved so expect alot more publicity than usual.
Here we have somebody admitting to a felony. Somebody call the cops :P

I've openly admitted before that I really just don't get it.... but what the hell difference does it make that my car is faster than yours, or accelerates quicker than yours? There is another car out there that is even faster anyway so you are never going to have the biggest dick so why bother?

You were specifically commenting on modifying cars to go faster - and there being no real skill involved, to which I responded - you were not commenting that street racing is stupid.

Even Multi-million rand F1 vehicles are constantly modified - its a hobby and a sport for many.

I'm failing to see where I was specifically referring to that. In each of those posts you quoted I say the following things which show specific reference to street racing :

"what the hell difference does it make that my car is faster than yours, or accelerates quicker than yours... the laughable part is that most of these idiots also put spoilers etc on their vehicles and then have to drive around the neighbourhood " - reference to "these idiots"in a thread about street racers should be self explanatory.

"drive a street car at high speed on a public road" - um, no track mentioned there.

This is where we started flipping things between street racing and track racing :

Hell, I do not have the slightest care in the world if someone races on a track. Knock yourself out I say. But in saying this don't tell me that a large number of those guys who spend a fortune on modding their cars don't also take them racing? After all what is the point of all the mods if you aren't going to show off.

Ok - you're 100% correct. There's no skill and there's no difference.

You obviously have immense experience in the world of street racing to know what its all about, including modifying cars for looks, and modifying cars for racing - and which is used for what.

xrapidx & JK8 should go and do a chicken dice, would be good riddance.
