Digging Digsby

been testing digsby since the alpha days; dont like it.

I tried digsby, and like all of them, the idea is great..
but the execution needs a bit of work, it has strange bugs, like it would randomly NOT allow me to move contacts into specific groups etc

Digsby gets good reviews but it's a pity that they don't support Skype as well. Since Skype's attraction is mostly for video and voice it means you'll need the Skype process running in the background anyway, integration with Digsby therefore may seem unnecessary (can just as well launch them separately). The main reason why Skype won't allow (at this stage) to be integrated into a multiprotocol client is because the encrypted sessions between users may be compromised, so Skype won't open their API that easily.
I'm a big Skype user so my use for a multiprotocol client like Digsby is limited but the idea of having all your messenger apps converged is of course a good one.

Its a good idea but it has some issues. Use it on a laptop and it seems if you leave it running and go into hibernate mode and come out of hibernate it slaps your cpu for a six. as in 100% for a couple minutes.

I use Disgby for Twitter, Google Talk, MSN, my GMail account and 2 Hotmail accounts. I used to have the Facebook Chat and a seperate Facebook news feed, running too. It works very nicely with a pretty low footprint (it used to be +-100 megs of memory, but now it's running at 43mb (plus an extra 7mb for the spell checking module).

The only issues I have with it is that it occasionally crashes while the screen saver is running (about twice a month) and that the application has no cancel button when it is connecting (or automatically downloading an update - the biggest has been 7 megs). It lately has not been able to connect to both hotmail accounts, but I think that has to do with Microsoft requiring a cookie. Maybe they'll patch it.

On the plus side, it has spell check and tabbed chats, easy to tweet in Twitter and the news feeds for Facebook/Myspace are a nice feature if you want to keep up to date and don't want to log into Facebook 20 times a day. They are multi-monitor aware for popup notifications. You can drag the window to dock, so it's nice to keep on your extended monitor docked to the side so that you can maximize your email and have Digsby present and visible.

IIRC that bug should have been resolved in one of the recent updates.
* Could be wrong though... I recall reading something about this in the recent release notes.
