its completely dead, slow, slow, slow, local just about ok.inernational dead.i wish they can sort this out,i have to keep on going back to afrihost

Oh and welcome to the internet... I see you haven't been online a lot... at all...

We constantly strive to bring value to our customers.

Uncapped at affordable pricing and accessibility to all has been unheard of in SA. Everyone that we have called in to help us develop our data/bandwidth plans have told us that it is impossible to do.

We disagreed.

We know that the pent up demand will peak right from the beginning and eventually subside when everyone works out that the Internet is just a big hard drive. We expect that to happen in a few months or when the users get tired of buying more storage.

The big guys have been quoted as saying that the price per gig can't come down below R40/gig until EASSY, WACS and other cables land.

Dall said that if IS has their way they would have uncapped DSL throughout. Current costing structures related to DSL however means that this is not feasible in the consumer ADSL market, and Dall pointed to issues like the cost for local IPConnect from Telkom as a prohibiting factor.

MTN SA CTO Sameer Dave also recently revealed that MTN is currently carrying 200 TB of monthly traffic on its network, up from 110 TB per month in early 2009. This significant growth gives a clear indication that there is strong bandwidth demand in South Africa, and Dave said that the challenge is to get the bandwidth to consumers.

We're not small in terms of bandwidth usage.

In conclusion:
This is a roller-coaster ride, but someone has to be brave enough to ride it. We appreciate the customers that are on this journey with us.

Its a GREAT ride. It may also be a painful ride, but one that we are determined to succeed in.

Potential customers can sit on the sidelines and watch us sort out issues. We need them to prove our business model. We will not take money from people we believe we are not delivering value to. The average chilli user is moving about 10 times or 1000% more than the average DSL user at a cost of R300. (This calc is based on an assumption that the average DSL user uses 5 Gigabyte a month.)

Sure, there are bumps. Even possibly catastrophic bumps.

I'm NOT saying:
We don't know where we're going.
We won't know when we get there.
We won't remember what we have done.
It is all borrowed capital.

@ Dave - so if I read you right - you expect to deliver 50 GB (at least!) to every user for R 300 - is that right ?

Why not open all the ports so you we don't have all these service problems (steam, IM, news, SSL etc etc.)

For the bandwidth rapists out there, when they hit 50GB, turn their taps down a bit ! They would still be uncapped - but not raping everyone else's bandwidth.

Dave - your last post was very, for the lack of a better word, inspirational ;-)

My connection has been fine since last night (except for the DNS delays) - you guys are obviously doing something right.

Keep up the good work - its great to have someone on the consumers side here in good ol' SA.

I dunno........that sure would feel like a cap/threshold system to me....something which digichilli has promised to ignore from the get-go.

Although what wouldn't be *so bad* is if bursting was shut off after 50GB. That is 256kb+ until 50GB and then no more of that delightful plus sign after that point...

Either way though I think I'd prefer a solution that doesn't involve "limiting" users to the amount they grab...considering that's why we all went to Digichilli isn't it?

Quite right. I have this argument often within our internal Chillies. It's almost a principle thing.

WE SELL BANDWIDTH NOT DATA.

It may be easier to do what you say but we are trying to to change a mindset. The 50 gig throttling will be pointed out as 'fine print'. Its more difficult now but may get to a better resolution in the medium and long term.

The challenge for us is to get to a managed uncapped fast network as soon as possible. Period.

Appreciated.

To add to what Dave just said, it won't work if everyone decides at the same time to download their 50Gb.... and besides, it then just becomes another rolling threshold service. I think what they are doing so far is nothing short of phenominal. Never before have I felt so happy about anything broadbandish in SA.

Sorry mate but throttling users goes against what the company is advertising. The company states "No thresholds Download all you can". That would be false advertising and wont be good for a new company. They have already started on a bad note, they dont want to completely tarnish their image!

Agree, sounds like a threshold. Still, if DC can provide a stable network with say, minimum 20GIGs of torrent DLs a month for R300, I'd be smiling! Just think they should be very clear about what people could expect on their website, and make sure they can deliver.

Personally I'd rather be capped, and top up, than throttled to a standstill.
I don't expect 100 or even 50GIGs torrents a month, DC must be profitable to be sustainable, but torrent DLs must be allowed and work (within reason) for me.

BUT, I'm hopeful all will run smooth soon.

"P2P* and torrents allowed" but you only get crap KB/sec.

Think my DigiChilli days are numbered.

What your are experiencing is not the final p2p throttling. It's just a momentary anomaly while they tweak the system.

I'm getting 40K on newsservers.

Dave we really appreciate what you guys are attempting to do. If you succeed, it'll change everything.

The cap mindset is so entrenched in the telecoms space in this country it's going take some real effort to break it.

It's hard for two reasons:

1. Stockholm syndrome (well not really, but it sure seems like it sometimes)
2. Caps do make sense some of the time.

Your idea is great for the simple reason that nothing promotes the expansion of network capacity like uncapped does.

Even if they sort their stuff out, I'm not renewing next month. This company and its attitude is seriosuly pissing me off... It has been a nightmare! There will be other options soon enough. I can wait, I've been waiting my whole life :) Can't please everyone I guess...

they musnt advertise that its 'uncapped' if they say users have a limit of 50gb per account
whats the point of uncapped then ?
