I have decided to buy a camera & I need some advice from you guys. I am really not that big into taking pictures & all I want it for is taking pictures when family & friends come over. Also if I go away on holiday I would be using it. Just something small, compact and of a good quality.

What can you guys suggest?

Budget is about R 2 800.

What about these? Should I be looking at 1080P?

Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you, also looking at the ultra-zooms. The Sony seems to be my number 1 choice at this stage, although there have been reports about it being a bit slow. A newer version of the Nikon has been released (S8100 I think). There is a Canon ultra-zoom available as well for the similar pricing, but can't recall the model number now.

The reviews and image samples for these three cameras all seem pretty good. Perhaps the more seasoned photographers can point us in the right direction. I would assume low-light performance and manual controls (aperture, ISO, etc) would be important factors to consider to get good quality pics.

I'm personally torn between the ultra-zooms or spending a bit more an getting the bridge cameras. The new Canon that has been released recently seems awesome, but pricing will probably be over R4k.
