So by the sound of that article, they will be useing CAM's you'll need for the back of your TV (dstv like smart-card) and it will be "pay to view" only - and I wonder how constitutional that will be for a public broadcaster...???

Right, it contravenes the universal access clause of the Broadcasting Act, I don't believe that the DOC has decided on this yet (along with a few other major issues). What I want to know is if they've started producing the boxes yet? Anyone know?

No, this is DvB digital Terrestrial. Your TV has a digital tuner, so you get a picture of better quality than dstv has ever produced with your regular arial (just same crap, better quality) HD, 5.1 surround sound, etc.
But they saying they want to make it pay-to-view (so they can track license holders) so you need a CAM (Conditional Access Module) which all digital TV's have in anycase, to get the signal so they can controll who has paid an access license which is what the controversy is about. Me personally - great, no pay sabc no watch - quite happy.
Can the National broadcaster do that or not? That is the big question.
ie No pay = no view. (which is not to say you cannot watch a whole pile of other stuff eg Etv which is FTA.)
Thread Bump: - So where exactly are these digital TV's that they all talk about but no one can find?
I need a digital TV, just incase, CAMs and all. Why can i not find one, CRT or plasma or LCD anywhere in this country considering switchon is in less than 3 months. Hello? are we all morons? I guess that is what the authorities take us for!
And [-]Hi Fi corporation, makro, Game [/-] etc will take us for.

It is either paid for or free. Been Terrestrial they can control how far the signal extends as opposed to satellite.
I think it’s BS and it will be free. Afterall it will be free till 2014 or whatever. How they going to pick and choose who pays (which they have no idea of while analog) and who doesn’t?

Got DvB-T card in my HTPC, I thought the new LCD's would have built in tuners which are compatible with digital broadcasts. Would have to change your aerial as well for digital.
I thought the extortion protector aka ICASA were still deciding this?
We should be so lucky.... but unfortunately I don't see it going that way. They'll probably cut off your subscription and then force you to pay their legal fees and monthly fee until such time as you reactivate the subscription.

Why are people so negative? And who is they? The SABC want conditional access and it's the DOC and ICASA who believe this should not be a feature. And no, if conditional access is implemented you will not be able to watch anything if you don't pay (not even e.tv). I think it is unlikely that it will though and while some of you may believe the worst of everyone, universal access is quite a critical concept for many of the people who work at ICASA and the DOC (even the SABC), I know because I've recently done interviews with some of these people for my research.
You probably will if, and I doubt it, they can switch on in 4 months, it will take considerably longer than that to change the bureaucratic mind set. You will probably have to buy a useless TV licence long after they introduce DvT just because it is still on the Statuate books.
No ware in the article did it mention pay per view, just that the broadcaster can see which channels are being watched, licence enforcement still falls to SABC. I don’t really see much changing until they switch off the analogue signal and again I seriously doubt they will hit a target of 2011, I expect digital subscribers will be sponsoring free analogue broadcast to disadvantaged communities only well into the 2020’s, and considering that analogue sets will be dumped cheep is that such a bad thing?

I just realized that this is going to be on heck of an eye opener.

This is great news people. My analogue reception sucks where I live. This is sooner than I expected too.

Ultimately everyone, that's why analogue is eventually going to be switched off. But you will get many more channels and ICASA will licence new free to air channels.
The digital signal will be switched on in November, but without the boxes no one will be able to use it. No country in the world has taken less than 5 years for digital conversion, so analogue won't be switched off in 2011, it was set by the DOC to compensate for the usual mucking about time.
