Digital TV subsidised

If Multichoice can provide DSTV decoders for R399 , how on earth can these cost R700 ? . Guess people already watching SABC on DSTV boquete wont need to get one of these ?

Seriously, I have barely watched TV for about 3 years (and trust me, I used to be the biggest tv addict you ever met). Watching it now I see things I never saw before, like, for example, how ****ing idiotic 9/10 presentations are.

Indeed. I'm quite happy to spend all weekend (occasionally - ie once every four to six months) watching a series, but as for television in general.... no, what an utter waste of time.

/gosh i can hardly believe these words come forth from my mouth, back in my tv addict days I used to hate people like me....

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Prob just another excuse for gubmint to steal our money

It's because it's SUBSIDIZED. They make their money off there subscriptions. No need to make money off the decoder.

Sigh.

Here's the plan...

1) Government pays for these subsidies out of our tax money.
2) Sipho awards the contract for the manufacture of these boxes to his brother's "shell" company "Thandi electronics"
3) The units cost R100.00 to manufacture.
4) Thandi is given R700 for each unit they make from the government
5) Thandi applies R100 to the cost of the unit and pockets the rest.
6) Thandi then charges the "poor" consumers R100 for the unit since it is being "subsidised".
7) after three years someone blows the whistle on this scheme and the government spends the next ten years and 1 Billion rand of the tax payers money on investigating this scheme.
8) The units stop working after four years.

Exactly. Hell its even the same company manufacturing the devices: Altech.

Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, the minister of communications, said yesterday that the [-]government[-] Taxpayer would fund up to 70 percent, or R490, of the cost

So now we can get the same kark only in digital. Surely feeding hungry children would be a better use for the 2.5bn.

Again, multichoice subsidize the decoder to lock in. Kinda like the "FREE" phone in cell contracts. The phone is subsidized like the decoder.

It's called the razor and razor blade model.

The razor is sold at cost while the blades have a Ludicrious mark up.

As an engineer, I can actually build one for a lot less than "R700". It will actually work too.

Rather spend 2.5 billion on widening internet access, not flipping television/marketing/idiot box.

But you forget that propaganda is far more effective via a TV set.

Internet users get to make up their own minds.

a few billion bucks for the sake of television....
THROW THE IDIOT BOX AWAY!!!

Debbie, they need it to make better use of the available spectrum. It kinda has to be done. Although I agree with you that most TV is crap, they must utilize the bandwidth in a more efficient way. i.e. digital compression.

KE? We have 3 channels on VHF. Erm. It can quite easily cope with 30.
