Digital TV switch on

The migration will also affect eTV and MNet

How will those that just have a MNet decoder be able to view MNet. Would they need a new MNet decoder that supports a digital signal, that would not make sense.

MNet is encoded so that only paying customers can watch it. With a digital MNet signal you would need a new digital capable MNet decoder to do the job. Last I heard they no longer sell MNet on its own, only DSTV, so does that mean no more MNet. I can't see them brining out a new MNet decoder when they no longer sell the product on its own.

Just curious :)

Do new TV`s come with digital inputs capable of decoding this signal? Or would you still have to buy decoders to power up that nice new R20 000 LCD tv? If you happen to be that one guy that has a R20k LCD but not DSTV....

Well apparently it is on already and some people can pick it up. Just got off the roof pointing antenna (strait cable – no boosters etc) in all 360 degrees and get jack in Cape Town – tv says no services available!

Anyone know who to complain to? Nothing on Sentech or SABC or Etv websites!!!!

Look to see if it has two arial plugs - one will say digital, the other analog for your vcr, decoders, etc.

It will also have a place for 1 or 2 smart cards (like dstv sim card) at the back (CAMS - Condition Access Modules) if it is a digital TV (incase SABC won't allow the service unless you pay-up). But thats for a pay-to-view subscription channels which I'm under the impression the public broadcaster is not allowed to do - but who knows in this place!

Anyway, there is zip digital signal in CT at the moment so I have no idea what all the fuss is about that our dear Ivy is spewing.
Would appear to be only in JHB.

I would really appreciate it if I can have the option to receive the k@k or not. I don't want to watch it, so why should I pay for it? What if I don't want to pay the R700 for the set top box? Will they cancel my TV License? (Not bloody likely).

The SABC generates billions from advertising but still we HAVE TO pay for the programming? And the programming is still pretty damn bad. They only broadcast stuff that nobody else want's to broadcast anymore (to save money for their own pockets).

Not that DSTV is perfect, but I can phone them right now and cancel my subscription. I will get a fine/jail time if I don't pay my TV License.

Ok WTF? Now all of a sudden they want to compare us to europe and the USA? Um werent they hand in hand with Telkom saying we need to compare ourselves with countries that are in the same position as us????

“1 November 2008 will see South Africa taking its rightful place in the ICT sector by joining countries such as the United Kingdom, New Zealand, United States, France and Mauritius that are advanced in their migration process,” said the DoC.

But we're not a first world country like United Kingdom, New Zealand and United States - that's why our telecoms costs are so high!

Ditto friedpiggy, saw your post after I posted :)

Seeing that television has taken the leap to digital migration, I wonder how long it will be before radio broadcasts (FM & AM) go digital...

Ok, so how about the SABC tv license? Will this new decoder only work if you do have a license - like the current MNet decoders? And if you don't have this decoder and don't plan to get one by 2011 - then you don't need to pay your tv license anymore?

rightful place my ****ing big toe man, they can only claim that once we have proper broadband speeds and noc ****ing caps

So how does this setup exactly work?
Example: I've got a normal CRT TV receiving old signal with my aerial.

So I must get a R700 decoder and what else?
How will I receive the signal? Do I need to get a dish as well?

It's not the 1st November yet! Maybe try again tomorrow...

No, you will just need the decoder. Transmissions will be terrestrial digital - almost the same as analogue you receive now. No satellite dish required.

700 decoder yes. or just get dstv then you don't need that crappy goverment box

I have been getting a signal on 586mhz in N Subs of Cape Town for a couple of weeks now. But it is only Data channels. Hope they will switch on at midnight. Re the licence thing. I think that all licences should have boxes on the back. One for each language spoken in SA, including Portugese, Chinese etc. When you pay your licence you mark what ever you speak and base the progs on that. ONE LICENCE PAYMENT, ONE VOTE FOR YOUR LANGUAGE. We would soon see who pays for the service.

I've got a dstv with the easyview package. SABC1,2,3,E.
Will these 8 new channels be on dstv also?

What is the "Cape Town TV" I pick up, has that always been there, I'm using a hybrid TV card with both analogue and digital tuners in it, got crap on always. Is it digital?
