Disabling WhatsApp's two blue tick read receipts on Android

You have issues to deal with if you don't want people to know that you've read their message.

I do not enjoy the younger generation that requires instant replies to their messages. I am in 4 hour-long back-to-back meetings. It happens. I don't reply to your messages instantly, and there's no use getting offended at me for not responding. On the other hand, it's a good way to make me never speak to you on WhatsApp again.

So? Anyone who knows you should be aware of the fact that you often can't respond to messages instantly. At least they'll know you've read their message, which is better than nothing.

I don't care much about the read receipts but nothing of this nature should be forced on anyone. People should be able to opt in or out of this sort of thing.

I am not going to walk around with two cellphones.

Granted, it's a schlepp.

On the plus, I just need to take one phone with when going out after hours, or when visiting other people. If it rings, then I'll know it's family or friends and not work.

wth... so what if people know i've read but I didn't reply.

If you get offended that I didn't reply because I didn't feel like it then you're exactly the type of person I prefer to have as a stranger.

Agreed. I don't get the whole fuss.

Besides that, the feature "sort of" existed already. Whatsapp tells you if the person is online and if not when last they were. Which means they either have read the message and chosen to not respond for what ever reason, or they have seen the message but have chosen not to read it yet... either way you being ignored.

The great thing for me now is if i give an instruction to an employee over whatsapp and the ticks are blue, he can't come back and say he didn't get it or didn't read it because then I just call bs.

You can turn last seen off or select a group which can see it... Just because you have a reason for liking the feature does not mean others should too. I don't do business on WhatsApp...

I actually like having the Blue ticks.

Now nobody needs to guess why I didn't respond because the truth should be obvious.

Yes.

Also If someone is not responding to me and there are no blue ticks then I know I can phone them.
If they have read the message then I don't need to phone them... they are just ignoring.

Sometimes you just want to know that they got the message because there was a change of plans etc.

I never implied that they MUST like it, just going on about how bad or evil it is ( so much so that Whatsapp had to bring in a quick fix ) is somewhat over the top.

As for you don't do business on whatsapp... thank for that info I guess?

I never implied that they MUST like it but to rant and rave about it so much that Whatsapp actually had to quickly bring in a fix is... well, pathetic.

It's not pathetic, it's called privacy and having the option of turning it off.

I couldn't care less if people see that I've read a message and have not replied but to dismiss those who don't like it as pathetic is asinine.

I know people who refuse to use BBM because they can't turn off read receipts.

yes, much better to hide info than let the people you converse with that you get busy sometimes :erm:

Removing the application all together is an option.

but to dismiss those who don't like it as pathetic is asinine.
Again, I am not referring to those who dislike it as pathetic but those, that rant about it as if their entire life has been invaded, as pathetic. I've seen many of these rants.. some of which are going as far as to turn data/wifi off, read the message and then turn it all back on only to avoid the read receipt.

If they don't like it fine, but no need to get carried away about it like your life has ended. There are more worrying things in life than a read receipt.

That's how it's done.

People complain. A fix is made available.

How many years did people have to wait for Microsoft to bring Start menu back :p

I just think that people should be able to decide for themselves and not have something shoved down their throats. WhatsApp made the right decision as far as I'm concerned.

But this blue tick thing hasn't been working on everyone anyway??

They might have not updated to that version yet is my only conclusion.

All i can say is the read receipt has saved me from getting verbally abusive to some people on my contacts list because they message me a question, followed 5 minutes later by endless lines of question marks, in hopes that I will answer out of desperation to make it stop. Now they can see I haven't read it and wait.
