Discovery Bank

Thanks I'm on platinum was going to ask what should I do for spending money?.
I also have an absa bank account so you say Draw cash at the atm? How much does thr banks charge for that withdrawal?

I think I'll swipe my discovery card for the hotel stay.

I also have $200 .which I can change at airport on arrival? Should u change to euros or rupee?
I upgraded to black so no withdrawal fees plus can use the international lounge here- I have been withdrawing 5k/10k a day.

The guys here will charge you more if you decide to pay by card or by Euros - also some islands dont have card facilities so you going to be travelling alot to find a place that does.

When you enter the airport there is a western union to convert to rupees I recommend just convert or withdraw from the ATM.

My ABSA bank card did decline a few times here and the only place I did find that I could withdraw was an ABSA ATM - there is a cost (I think 80 bucks) and 2.75% conversion charge with absa. Swipes are also R4 per swipe with absa.

To upgrade to platinum will be more per month. But then you get lounge key? Can you take a guest ? It would only Benefit in Mauritius when I leave because in Johannesburg platinum gives me 1 international visit (in sa when leaving sa)

I forgot I'll battle to find an atm that my absa card can withdraw cash..hmmm as hotel is a bit remote

The difference in price from black to platinum is worth it for the international perks(free international ATM withdrawal + loungekey access in Mauritius)

You can take 1 guest with loungekey.

If your hotel is remote, please also hire a car. To get a taxi here is a nightmare and the guys here are greedy as hell with their prices. Been paying R200 to R300 to travel less than 1km.

Pop me a pm if you need any more info or help

The foreign transactions fees are weird, as typically all fees (interchange, network fees, etc.) are passed on to the merchant.

So it appears all the banks are double dipping on this. They receive somewhere in the realm of ~2% as the card issuer (this comes from the merchant) and then they're charging you an additional ~3% as the consumer! This in spite of the fact that they also make some money on the forex conversion on the transaction.

If they all start doing it, the only way to stop them is consumer protection legislation. I believe these fees are strictly regulated in Europe.

The last two online transactions that I've done with my Discovery credit card have sent me an OTP by default, instead of giving me the option to authorise via the app, as has been the case in the past. Has this happened to others as well?
And then soon after making this payment with an OTP, I get a notification from my Discovery app saying "You can now authorise online purchases only in your banking app. Enable notifications today"
Huh? Now I'm totally confused.

Nope. When you get to the 3D secure site it asks you if you want the text or in-app.

It will sometimes do that after you've been offline or if it cannot reach your app to do a temporary lack of signal etc.

Strange, seems the Foreign Currency, Credit Card and Transact options are greyed out within the Discovery Bank App for the past week or two now. I've been wanting to add a credit card for the Vitality benefits, but haven't been able to.

Did a payment to someone today and requested the proof of payment to myself - doesn't seem to be coming through.
Tried from both the website and app. Normally received immediately.

Anyone else experiencing any delays with POP?

Anyone know if Discovery Bank can receive international payments using an IBAN? Shyft can only receive SWIFT payments.

Doubt it, IBAN numbers are not really used by RSA banks, it is an EU thing
An IBAN number is your banks swift code combined with your account number. Depending on the length requirement of an IBAN number, there may be additional characters between the swift and account numbers.

And SA Banks definitely do use IBAN numbers when you need to make an international payment.

What you describe is not an IBAN number, this is something very unique that is not used in SA. SA banks use SWIFT/BIC + Branch Code + Account Number for international payments, that is however not an IBAN number.

I have a question regarding the foreign currency account:
Is it an offshore account like Investec does, or is it simply a South African account locked to the specific currency?

Reason I ask, Barclays UK is closing my wife's account as she is no longer resident in the UK, and we need a UK account where her rental income will be paid into so we're exploring options at the moment.

Create a Wise Account. Less headaches as you’ll get an actual UK account with all the details etc. No monthly fee either

Transferring to a foreign currency account e.g. Euro/Pound etc. reduces your yearly discretionary allowance (SARB allows us each to take R1m offshore per year no questions asked) so it must be domiciled offshore in some sense

Did anyone notice that the Financial Analyser actual spend and Spend on the Rewards spend wheel dont match up. Mine shows a R2k difference.
