Discovery Vitality [2017]

Nah.... Just do it again tomorrow :)

Usually I would, but I'm slightly injured, so even one 300-pt HR workout is maybe not too good for me. But I don't want to miss a week's goal (flight ticket, shoe booster). I guess that's the one problem with this system - it encourages you to exercise even when you should probably be resting.

I did a HR workout, 30 mins @ >80% of max HR, but I forgot to stop the timer on my fitness tracker! By the time I realized, obviously my HR was down and my average HR was between 70 & 80%. So - is there any way I can get 300 pts for this workout instead of only 200?

Keep going and make it 60mins @ >70%

Can a more experienced Vitality forum member help a newbie out here?

I'm thinking of signing up to take advantage of the cashback offers (food mostly) and I'd like to get a feel for what I can expect. I tried using that calculator and I think I'd be a silver member.

Do the yearly tests have fees? I don't have a gym membership but I'm pretty healthy, so is the wife. Is this program worth considering without gym being a factor?

Also don't have other discovery products. I'd need to sign up for something in order to quality for Vitality no?

Basically, is the cashback (excl gym discounts) good enough for a silver member to justify all the fees? Eat quite healthy, maybe spend R3000-4000pm on things that would fall into the healthy category. Not opposed to getting a gym membership or anything - just haven't been drawn there much as we're pretty active in other areas.

Thanks

Quick question re flight booster.

My wife and I are active and make our weakly goals. If I book 4 tickets (2 for us, 2 for the kids) will only our 2 tickets get the "100%" discount or all 4? Kids are under 18.

Thanks

Just the two of you

The health check does have a fee if you're not on a Discovery health plan - R250 this year. The fitness test costs R375. You should easily make Gold if you do both. If you buy yourself a cheap step counter (Black Friday coming up... there should be loads of deals) and do 10 000 steps per day most days, I'd say you don't need the fitness test, since you can earn enough fitness points through the step counter to help you reach Gold.

I'm not sure you have to have another product - this page https://www.discovery.co.za/vitality/join-today seems to suggest you can just join Vitality?

In terms of what you can save, I'm single, and a really low spender (only spend on the credit card 6 months of the year), and I've earned R1 300 in healthyfood cashback this year. So this would be double if I were buying food the whole year - R2 600, and Vitality cost me R2 628 this year.

If I were you, though, I'd consider the credit card. The monthly fees are the same as most other cards, and if you opt in to Discovery Miles (R420 pa, I think) and get to a decent Vitality status, you can earn some decent cashback via the Miles Multiplier.

I'm on Diamond status, and I've earned 16 365 Discovery Miles this year, which equates to R1 636 worth of spending at various retailers - and the list where you can spend Miles is growing (I don't spend them - I convert them to Avios and use them for flight upgrades). Again - I'm single and a low spender on my card, so this would easily be more for a "normal" spender.

I've saved R821.10 on a 9-day car rental for a holiday in Cape Town, plus R886 on a kulula flight.

I do exercise regularly, making my Active Rewards goals every week, so I've also saved essentially R1 650 on my running shoes, and will get another R1 711 back via the flight booster for my kulula flight (though perhaps I should offset the cost of my fitness tracker against this, since I had to buy the fitness tracker to enable me to make my weekly goal - but that was just a one-off purchase and I can get these discounts each year). If you're active already, you could get a decent fitness tracker with HR monitor and be eligible for these discounts as well via Active Rewards.

So in my opinion, it's totally worth it.

@Ejeckt, no point joining Vitality till 1 January if you do decide to take the plunge. If you join now you won't make Gold.

Also, if you have all your banking with FNB then FNB credit card for eBucks IMO beats DiscoveryCard.

Wow, very helpful post. Thanks!

Just called discovery actually and they staid to qualify for Vitality I need to have one of their products, and the cheapest one I can get is life cover for at least R350pm.

Yeah I am with eBucks and my whole reason for looking into Discovery is that I just learned I don't have to shop at checkers to get the full monthly eBucks from checkers (can just buy a voucher and use that to pay my Pretorium Trust, say). Never really looked at Discovery before because I felt kinda stuck with Checkers :p

Thanks guys. I'll review again in January.

Hi Guys. Joining Discovery and interested in Vitality. My two kids are under the age of 5, for them to qualify for the ster kinekor benefits, do they also need to be registered for Vitality? Do I pay for one member or 3 members?

They'd have to be included in the policy

I have a question with regards to the Apple watch. I know I can use that to monitor heart rate and get more points. But can i still do this if i do not have a iPhone? My Friends have iPhone and i can just configure it the first time with their iPhone but once setup is complete will i be able to sync my Heart rate date with Samsung Health to get the extra points? without using the Apple watch to sync to another iPhone just straight to the Vitality.

Apple Watches can only Sync with IPhones as far as I know...

https://support.apple.com/kb/SP766?locale=en_US

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) requires an iPhone 6 or later with iOS 11 or later. Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) requires an iPhone 5s or later with iOS 11 or later. Apple Watch Series 1 requires an iPhone 5s or later with iOS 11 or later.

If you're talking about taking out the Apple watch benefit with Active Rewards, and you don't have an iphone, you can always just get it and sell the watch and get a different watch that'll work with your phone, like tomtom, garmin, samsung, etc

yes i am going to do that for myself. But my wife like the apple watch the most and dont want to sell. So was looking around if it can still be used to sync Health Data without a iPhone. (I Know it requires iPhone for first setup)

There's no way to pair an Apple watch with an android phone, even after initial setup

Anybody know where i can get the previous versions of Discovery? Preferably 2 versions back?
