Discovery Vitality in 2016

For this year the maximum will be 1200 points.

Next year things will change and you'll only get 100 pts per gym visit. You can then earn additional points based on the duration and intensity of the workout - up to 3000 per day. Which makes me think that obviously then the weekly goals would have to change as well align with this.

The other change is that you'll be able to get to Gold just based on exercise points alone - they've increased the caps so that you can get to 45000pts without having to do Aids tests etc. Definitely a lot more emphasis on exercise next year.

But what if you have a program where you run say 5 times per week. 5*150+5*50 = 1000 points plus say 1 gym session. That is training for an ultra marathon and it is 50 points short of the maximum. There is something like too much exercise. Plus my polar only gives me 1 type exercise points per day at the moment. If it is up to 3000 points per day next time - will they count 2 exercises with the polar on the day too? Or will it have to be different exercises?

Yeah, 1200 is definitely gonna be tough.
My strategy at the moment is to make sure that every day I get at least 150 pts - mainly by getting more than 10000 steps which is not too difficult. And then on one or two of the days I try to get the 50 pt bonus.

In your example of training 5 days per week, you're going to have to make sure that on one of your two rest days you somehow get 50, by doing more than 5000 steps - logging your food weekly also gets you 50, but that a bit of a pain.

Not sure if they'll take multiple sessions per day next year - I think intensity (% of max HR) will be key, followed by duration of the activity - being lazyish myself :) , I can't wait to figure out the what is the least I can do, for the most points, haha!

Have they announced anything regarding the free Apple Watch or other fitness devices?

It's not a perfect system by any means. I would have added another level of achievement for highly intense exercise sessions because the points system on there seems designed for mid level people and there's nothing to measure for instance running over an hour at a time at a very fast pace. It's also meant to reward group events disproportionately which is great if you do park runs, sucks if you don't.

Had a session at our work.

Apparently it is the Apple Sport Watch.

You purchase it per month.

Can't remember the pricing. But the more goals you achieve the cheaper the watch become. 3 Goals achieved you only pay R100. Didn't see anything about achieving 4 goals.

Ja, I do do Parkruns, but that is the beginning of the goal week. If I miss that and don't get any other runs in, it will end badly for that week.

From what I remember the requirements work as follow:
1) Must purchase watch via Discovery mall (might be redirect from there to istore online)
2) must pay with Discovery card
3) must select to pay it on budget over 24 months
4) If you reach 4 active goals in a month, that month's payment is discounted by 100%.
5) try to reach active goals for 24 months in a row to get the watch free

By no means that will be easy with the moving targets for goals, but at least you will be working for the watch in a different way.

Discovery still scores the monthly fee to have a discovery master card. Also the miles fee if you join that program. And there is another fee for something else, can't remember but it is on their website if you get a discovery master card.

Sounds correct and in line with what I found:

And Discovery said they "would reveal more details about the offer at a later stage."

I understood it as follows:

Watch will be R6000. It will be put on your discovery credit card, interest free for 24 months.
Every month, R250 needs to be paid against the principal amount.
That will either be from you, discovery or a combination - dependent on how many goals you achieve.
0-1 goals you pay the full R250
4 goals you pay R0
Cant remember 2 and 3 goals, but it's obviously somewhere in between.

Some percentage of your max heart rate, adjusted for age. Not sure on the specifics though

That email looks very different to what is on the site though (for 2016) :erm:

Either way. To meet the new targets you will need an HR device.

I presume it would be similar to the Polar points you get currently, which are:-

(MODERATE??)

To earn up to 150 Vitality points you have to:

Track at least 30 minutes of physical activity in one exercise session a day at an average heart rate of more than 60% but less than 70% of your age related maximum heart rate; or

Track at least 30 minutes of physical activity in one exercise session a day at a minimum average speed of 4 kilometres an hour;

AND (VIGOROUS??)

To earn 50 bonus points you have to:

Track at least 30 minutes or more of physical activity in one exercise session a day at an average heart rate of more than 70% of your age-related maximum heart rate; or

Track at least 60 minutes or more of physical activity in one exercise session a day at an average heart rate of more than 60% of your age-related maximum heart rate.

Track at least 30 minutes of physical activity in one exercise session a day at a minimum average speed of 7.2 kilometres an hour.

Track at least 60 minutes or more of physical activity in one exercise session a day at a minimum average speed of 4 kilometres an hour.
