No. Do NOT do this.
I used to have a Smeg dishwasher; my wife thought that a dose of Sunlight detergent would be as effective as the little pills that you use for dishwashers.
The insane amount of foam produced overflowed the internal cavity, and into the top, where it shorted the motherboard and left the machine beyond repair.
Just use the little pills of soap that your dishwasher manufacturer recommends. Not detergent.
Losing a Smeg like that was painful. We now have a Bosch, and an often repeated lesson about reading the manufacturer instructions.

No specifically dishwasher detergent. Either in powder or tablet form.

To be frank, I think all SMEG devices except for gas stove are overpriced crap. A Bosch/AEG may have survived that mishap
I have an AEG XXL dishwasher. Had it 2 years now. Amazing - cleaning and only 9L water per wash.
My in laws have an AEG that is nearly 20 years old that has been running without a hitch all that time. Runs daily. It's so old that finally all the plastic in the soap dispenser or door is starting to erode.
BTW I feel that old AEG has a better rack/tray design configuration. You can put so much in there compared to my XXL

Have had the basic Bosch as well now 4 yrs. Not a single problem and that thing works hard
understood. Plumber coming tomorrow to setup the dishwasher as there is no inlet/outlet for it ATM.
Also do I need to use Salt ? i am in cape town and I measured the hardness using a test strip that came with the dishwasher, it says its between 7-16 DH.
The reason I am asking is that we use a lot of aluminum utensils for cooking and it is said that the salt is the reason for corrosion of aluminum utensils in a dishwasher. If I can avoid salt it would be great. or we might just have to wash the aluminum utensils by hand.

Check the guideline that came with the machine. I don't need to use salt.
We are in Cape Town. We bought our first dishwasher in 1978, and have been told by all the suppliers over the years that salt is not necessary as our water is soft at the coast. We've never used salt and had no ill effects. We do use rinse aid, otherwise things come out streaky. We've used loose Finish powder for a few years, comes in a plastic sachet at PnP. Does the job fine.
Even without salt, aluminium gets discoloured in the dishwasher in my experience. If you have proper crystal wine glasses, don't put them in the dishwasher as they apparently get etched.
well if thats the case, I wont use salt but will put aluminium utensils in the dishwasher and when the cleaning lady comes I will give her some steel wool to make them shine again.
I'd try putting one that isn't your favourite in the DW and see what happens.

Salt for dishwashers isnt that expensive in comparison to Rinse Aid and Powder.
The no name brands work fine and do not damage your dishwasher.
I bought a 1KG bag from PNP beginning of the year for around R12 and it is still not finished. I use my machine twice a week.
