If I saw a piece of equipment overseas that I think may do well in South Africa - say for example a fancy irrigation computer - and I wanted to bring in a few to reseller, what would be needed?

I did see something, emailed the owner for a distributor around here and was told they do not have - but need one in the area. He then proceeded to tell me how the partner program works and what discount I'd get if I bought for resell.

They're very niche so wouldn't sell many and would be pocket money if they did sell and one could do 'sell' them on the side.

Would I need an importers code?
Would I just buy like I'm buying from any Amazon and pay with a standard card like normal?
Would I need a business - or could I do the first (for example) 10x units as a standard purchase to see how it goes?

For so little I assume you just pay import tax and no need for a registered business(you could say you need 10 personally :P)

Personally you can import to a max of R20k annually. If you go over this amount you need an importers code.
I import stuff regularly and have found that having the code makes clearance a breeze compared to when I imported in my personal capacity.

Different items attract different importers tax. Water reticulation items are fairly low if I recall.

maybe a farming category, surely tax on essential equipment would be lower and higher on luxury items? Or is that too advanced for cANCer

Ok it's not a irrigation system - that was an example. It's this >>> http://www.cameraaxe.com/ so it is a luxury item (camera computer)

What if I did a group buy of say 20 units for friends and family? It'll be over R20,000.00 - would I need to pay some type of import duty on that?
