A few friends and family have used attorneys for both contested and non-contested divorces. Is there a diy process as well for non-contested divorce?

By maybe just filling out forms and having the summons drawn up for a small fee and delivered by the Sheriff for a small fee?

Or is it essential to use a attorney?

As long as both parties have decided what they want you don't need an attorney. You can do everything yourself except deliver the summons. That will cost you less than R100 and if you still get along with your soon to be ex partner it can be done in the sheriff's office.
