No firstly you exaggerating because you know 'fek' all about fireworks and secondly the rockets as displays are significant because you know 'fek' all about diwali. Dont comment when you dont understand.

Ahhh yes, like you seem to know about sound and how it propogates through different mediums. The rockets are NOT significant, certain fireworks may be but the large rockets are not in any way shape or form significant.

Ok what your issue with rockets ? which rockets are you talking about they dont sell the huge aerial sound displays anymore they have all been banned and sale is prohibited. For example you cannot purchase anything like the thundering king.

So what this tells us

A) You talking rubbish about the scale of the fireworks in your area

b) You are lying that the fireworks have no light aspect

like a spiteful old man with a stick up his ass

and tell me exactly why its not significant ?

might want to find something else to write your thesis on as your simple equation of 1 kilometre per second is flawed.

In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the speed of sound is 343.2 metres per second (1,126 ft/s). This is 1,236 kilometres per hour (768 mph), or about a kilometre in three seconds or a mile in five seconds.

Doppler effect!

My issue with rockets? Really, you're asking this question now.

They do still sell the huge aerial displays, anything the goes more than 30 or 40m in the area and explodes, and said explosion is enough to rattle my house windows from over 200m away.

Its not significant because its not the only type of firework available that provides light. This absolute insistence on using rockets like the ones that are used has crossed the boundary of "religious" significance into "fsck em all, I will do what I want and claim its my religious celebration and you can't infringe on that right".

I think something is wrong with your house windows if it rattles from fireworks especially a rocket :wtf:

Rattling your window from a 3inch display shell ? dude your house is made from cardboard ?

Secondly how do you expect to have 'silent' displays ? that doesnt exist. You need to launch the display into the air and you need to launch it to a safe height. You not going to achieve that silently.

As always most rockets are very small now a days you dont get the HUGE rockets anymore. Another thing the bigger the rocket the higher up it flies so its not a very effective display.

So again you talking nonsense. Either you misunderstanding or lying

EDIT:

your house it probably illegal you should have a building inspector come check it out since you such a law abiding citizen of the republic no?

Why the rubbery **** do you want to set a "display" off in your back garden?

Not to mention the fact that it's illegal for unlicensed people to hold a fireworks "display"....

who said its illegal ?

a display is defined as any firework that creates light. You allowed to set off fireworks with a certain amount of black powder. When you exceed that amount of black powder then you require a license

Again, its not illegal.
By unlicensed do you mean under 16 years old?

The nerve of people that make up their own laws and think they're correct, what a joke!

Incorrect.

My windows don't rattle and I've been growing up with fireworks being used around me, in fact I live opposite a place where one of the best firework displays on Diwali takes place and I haven't had such an issue.

RiaX, I think you are completely underestimating the size of the bangs. Where do you live? If you are so adamant about arguing, please try and grasp that those who are complaining are not lying about massive bangs. They are bloody big.

Wow, is this debate going to take place every year about Diwali?

While you are legally allowed to buy fireworks, people will let them off. You got to learn to deal with it, and take the necessary precautions etc. If you feel someone if violating the law, disturbing the peace etc - call the cops, let them deal with it.

The law says stealing is illegal - but i still need to put burglar bars on my windows etc. I can't be ignorant an expect nobody to try break into my house. You sometimes have to do things to protect yourself etc.

I think another issue is that if you live in a more open area the sound is more audible as I kind of noticed yesterday near Morningside. The guy described it as a civil war taking place:D

I live in durban. Diwali has been very intense where I live every year. My dogs (all of them since I can remember) have never had an issue with fireworks because they understand fireworks. The same goes for my neighbours and everyone I know personally that celebrates diwali.

Its the ignorant that panic, exaggerate the noise and panic their animal more by locking it a room or chaining it. The animals that get hurt are the ones that dont house their animals properly. Your pet your responsibility.

So yeah your argument is invalid on where I live.

Oh boy.

Joburg's by laws, from their own web site:

To stage a fireworks display, permission must first be first sought in writing from the fireworks working committee or from the chief fire officer in that particular region. The application must reach the committee or the chief fire officer 14 days before the planned display, to allow members of the public to launch any objections.

If an application to present a fireworks display is approved by the council, it may require that the display be presented only on "suitable premises designated by the council and under the supervision and control of an official designated by the council".

This law is not only for public spaces; permission must also be sought to set off crackers in private yards. In the application, the person must outline the plan of the house, including any overhead pylons. A site inspection by the emergency management services will be conducted.

However, permission is not needed on days of cultural and religious celebrations, but the fireworks may only be set off during stipulated times. These include Diwali, Chinese New Year, Human Rights Day, Guy Fawkes Day, Christmas Eve and the Day of Goodwill.

Note, the permission referred to is to set off crackers. Not to hold a display.

This.
People are acting like is happening for first time!

I love how they describe it as a warzone .... when none of them have been in a warzone LOL
