Do I have a unlocked iPhone 3g ?

Hi Guys

Bought a 3g iPhone from iStore Menlyn and would like to know if it unlocked or not, silly question but I'm getting conflicting info from the shop. I have tried a MTN and CellC sim card and they both work. Second question if it is indeed unlocked what would be the easiest way to Jailbreak it, I don't want to stuff it up.
 
If you've tried both an MTN and CellC card successfully, then it's not locked. (If it was locked, then you would only be able to use one SP and not all of them).

Best to leave jailbreaking over to the experts with money to waste.
 
The iphone 3g is unlocked by default if you have purchased it here. By testing with different sim cards you have confirmed this.

As for jailbraking,its fairly simple to be honest, a few seconds on google should sort u out. Make sure you back up ur phone as well as the firmware that its running on. You can always restore it to its original state if u need to.
 
There's not much point in jailbreaking an unlocked phone. There isn't a whole lot in Cydia and Installer to make it worthwhile.

I have yet to find a compelling reason to jailbreak mine yet - what's yours?
 
The only reason I can think of to Jailbreak your phone is to get access to Cydia "App store" It's got some pretty cool apps like Quake :-) and some pretty nifty GPS mapping SW.

Other than that there is no reason I can think of.
 
pdaNet - use it as modem at work via USB to bypass the works firewall..

Also works great on a laptop if you do not have a datacard
 
Thanks Adsl, one thing would it make a difference if I Jailbreak the phone on a Mac or a PC ? I would probably be using both to Sync from time to time. And aswell I already upgraded my iPhone on my MAc to 2.2.1 would that make a diffrence ?

True I must admit that I have probably sent three MMS's in my life, you could just email it from your phone in any event. Point is there are quite a few simple things that the iPhone can't do and 3rd party Dev's have taken upon themselves to address a few shortcomings. And even if they were available in the App store South Africans would most likely be blocked from buying them.

no difference on pc or mac
 
it just seems silly to me to buy an unlocked phone (which you pay a fortune for) and then go and jailbreak it... I had a hacked phone for a year and half before I got an official one, and the reason I did is so i didn't have to deal with software upgrade issues etc... jailbreaking you're phone puts you right back in the same position, and you may as well have bought a locked phone..

There are many apps that I use daily that were installed from Cydia but obviously that depends on what kind of things you do with the device - it changes from person to person.
But basically in terms of applications more is better than less and jailbreaking / installing apps / checking out different themes... whatever is just another cool thing that you can do with an iPhone apart from listening to tunes and making calls:)
 
I'm pretty close to Jail breaking to be honest, might sound silly but my main gripe at the moment is cut and paste. The lack of such a insignificant little feature is driving me mad. For some reason MTN sends SMS's from 1023 bracketed, this blocks the the add to contacts/call number feature on the iPhone.

Another stupid question if I had to send my iPhone in for service would I just restore via iTunes to get it back to normal.
 
I jailbreak for 1 reason - to get BiteSMS via Cedia or Installer. It offers landscape mode, emoticons, SMS forwarding, individual message deletes, etc. Just watch out for version 3.1 in Cedia, not free anymore. The older version 2.7 is preferred.

The springboard customisation stuff like winterboard is nice to have, but I feel it slows the interface down.

What are you talking about?! I use 10 applications EVERY DAY ALL DAY that come from Cydia...

And that's just a handful of what I use. My list goes on.....

If it weren't for jailbreaking my phone I'd have it sold and would be using my N95.

Don't understand why so many people are afraid to jailbreak. I mean 1.600.000 have done it safely.

Does this list not change your thoughts on jailbreaking?
