Apologies if this has been asked before, but this is my first post and I tried searching the forum but the search is confusing.

I recently have FTTH installed at my property. All is working as expected and I now want to extend the use of it. I connected my DSTV Decoder to the router via CAT6 cable and it works perfectly as I can access and watch DSTV Catch Up + as well as Showmax.

Now I want to watch Netflix and YouTube. Do I need a TV Box (Android) of some sort to do this or can I use my Xbox or PS4 for this? Also, what else would I benefit from getting an TV Box over and above what the Xbox or PS4 can provide me with?

A whole new world of entertainment

Do you have a 4k TV and planning on steaming in 4k?
Which xbox do you have?
One - Good app support and media playback which is better than many TV boxes but limited to FHD
One S - Same as above with 4k + HDR media playback
One X - Same as above with MORE POWER!!!

I have smart TVs, TV box, i5 HTPC and Xbox One X.
The One X definitely handles media playback better than the rest

I do not have a 4k TV.
I have an Xbox 360 and PS4 which I understand is capable of 4k streaming.
Apologies for sounding stupid, but I am very new to this.

You would need a PS4 Pro for 4k streaming, not the base model.
Shouldn't matter though since you don't have a 4k TV so maybe try out Netflix on the PS4 first before buying a TV box

xbox 360 would be useless.

A Mi Box is good value for money.

As far as apps go,
you could try out FreeFlix HQ.
and Cinema HD.

Those two should cover most/all of your needs.

Both Netflix and YouTube works just fine on my kid's Xbox 360. So it really wont harm if you connect your Xbox to your wifi or Ethernet and give it a try.

Obviously you get better resolution and sound options on XB1 and higher and dedicated streaming boxes such as Mi Box, Litbox and Skyworth box.. but if you are happy with standard 720p video res then do give it a try on your XB360.

Edit: Oh and welcome to the forum. There is no such thing as stupid questions really, we all asked noob questions when we first started out...

Use your PS4. You may have to download the Netflix app. The only problem I had when I used the Netflix app was that Sony Playstation server was always down which for some reason meant I could not watch netflix. But first register for the free month. See if you like. Maybe the ps4 is sufficient for your needs and you dont upgrade.

Get an Android box, download DSTV Now, ask your brother or sister who has a premium subscription for their accoint details and your sport is sorted.

Cancel DSTV

I use an app on my box called MOBDRO, 350 sports channels to stream, all free.
Most probably illegal as well and don't carry the content people are interested. Really this trend of people telling others to leave Dstv is getting old.
