Do Owls attack people and animals?

And I found the series. It was called 'Ululu ubuyile' a Xhosa horror series that played on TV SA about an owl that terrorised people. If I remember correctly they would kill it, but it would keep coming back for revenge.

And for the record I'm not afraid of birds. I'm just not comfortable with owls outside of the zoo or tv..

Superstitious rubbish like this that is killing this country. Do you belive in the tokolishi and witchcraft as well?

I don't believe I'm superstitions, but there are certain stories or things you see as a child that you can't shake even after educating yourself about them. I heard alot of stories as a child about witches being able to turn into animals to carry out their evil deeds like the skin walkers of the native Americans. Which actually explains my fear of millipedes. Ever since I can remember, I was told that millipedes could be used by witches to kill people by crawling into their ear.

I know that scientifically speaking it shouldn't be possible, but the African side of me feels otherwise.

Well, you are being a little silly... and perhaps it's overdue that you're told as much. Owls don't eat people, millipedes aren't harbingers of death and bush babies are awesome little dudes.

I appreciate that you've got the interest of your pooch at heart here, but he's unlikely to end up as owl food.

Well I'm sure if you spent time a bird of prey sanctuary or bird park you would find out enough about the animals to get over the fear, I've seen some people that were very scared of snakes becoming quite familiar with them just by getting to know a little more.

I think he's referring to people who kill animal and people based on irrational superstitious fears.

It's a public forum mate, I'm just setting you straight. Every year hundreds of owls are killed because if stupidity and superstition. They are a critical part of the ecosystem. You did ask.

I moved into a new neighbourhood recently and I've twice seen an owl. The thing kept following me with it's head and eyes and I was too scared to turn my back to it. I don't know whether the SPCA can come get it or not as I've only ever seen it at night.

It worries me, because I have a small Jack Russell and I have to let her out in the evenings and don't always want to follow her outside. Plus there was a series SABC used to run years ago - can't remember the name- that my mind keeps going to.

I don't want any harm to come to the bird, but can the SPCA catch it and maybe relocate it?

I believe I specifically asked animal experts here not just any old Tom, Dick or Harry. Neither did I mention anything about the bird being harmed. I'm going to ignore all your stupid responses from now, so don't waste your breath.
 
Owls will not attack a person (unless maybe you're threatening their eggs?)
They may prey on small animals, like small dogs.

This is possibly the most sad thing I have read all morning. They are awesome creatures and you have absolutely nothing to fear! Perhaps a better idea here, is to get out more into nature and understand it a little better before wishing for a sterile landscape where nature has no place.

People keep talking about leaving a better world to their children, and then we get these kinds of view points. Sad panda.

Looking for animal experts on a technology forum? And this is a public forum, so yes actually you did ask every Tom, Dick and Harry. You are going to do a lot of ignoring if you try and ignore opinions that you dont like.
 
@OP - the if you walk near the owl, it would look at you and follow you with its head. You're MUCH larger than it is, and you're much more dangerous to it than it could ever be to you. So, the owl is simply keeping a watchful eye on this extremely dangerous animal walking by. If you walk closer to it, it would probably fly away. If it doesn't fly away, assume that it has hatchlings nearby and that it is trying to defend them. In that case, back off and it would leave you alone.

As for your dog - I've never come across someone who've lost a dog to owls. In fact, the owl eats rats, which also choice prey for snakes. By eating the rats the owl is keeping your resident snake population down, which is probably a bit better for your dog. That said - don't go killing all snakes now, please! They can be relocated to a place that doesn't threaten your dog.
 
Lets make it clear I have some barn owls that live in my area, I never see them only hear them in the distance.They are awesome birds, if I catch or hear that the OP hurt that bird I will personally start a donation thread for petrol to come kick you in the nuts, castrate you and watch me feed it to some owls nearby.

Some owl species are endangered others are threatened, and they play such a vital roll in pest control, and just because of some idiotic reasoning of fear, the same fear that saw many owls getting killed in JHB because of superstition BS a kick in the nuts would be to good for you.

Is the threat of removing you from the gene pool enough to convince you to leave the bird alone ? :D
