Do you also hate the phrase "significant other"?

but mybb people use 'so' the most I find... maybe I live in a strange place
I prefer girlfriend/boyfriend or husband/wife
or 'partner'
significant other implies they are significant :D
/runs!!

"Significant other" inadvertently implies that everyone else in your life is insignificant. The floozie you've been with for 3 weeks is more significant to you than your mother...or cat? GTFO.

Actually, they like using the term life partner, even though many of their relationships are not for life.

1) pretty ignorant and/or bigoted
2) it is their partner in life at that moment of their lives, it does not always mean until-we-die.

I kinda get 'significant', but wonder just what is signified.

It's 'other' that's problematic.

The combination is bizarre.

Exactly how I feel. The word other somehow cancels out the meaning of significant.

A definition of other...
b*often capitalized*:*one considered by members of a dominant group as alien, exotic, threatening, or inferior (as because of different racial, sexual, or cultural characteristics

How so?

Significant other refers to a couples. So obviously if only 1 is present you're talking about the "other" one.

'Other' is an adjective. Why is the noun it describes omitted? My own suspicion is it's another mutilation of language and meaning inflicted by political correctness. Vomit-inducing.

In similar vein (discarded noun) is the idiocy of calling an external HDD just an "external", as in "I saved the file on my external". Groan.

On the other hand I had an issue whenever an ex called me her man.

Dis my man daai.
Bly weg van my man af.
Ek en my man gaan uit.

I think she might have forgotten my name.

I think using the word "man" induces some sort of euphoria amongst coloured girls. :p Happened to me too.

hahaha.

My ouma en oupa het makaar altyd pappa en mamma genoem. Altyd as ons by hulle kuier my ouma wat in die garage waar my oupa in werk skree "Pappa....soek jy kofffffffieeeeee?????" hahaha.

I suppose it originated from when their kids were still living at home and they just took to calling each other that?

So be glad your wife aint calling you Pappa or Daddy lol
