anybody? I still do, sometimes when I can't get to the clippers fast enough. What is it that makes us do that? Some mineral deficiency? Not enough keratin in our diet?

No, never have...

Reason for biting nails - OCD? Habit?

ICD, actually (impulse-control disorder) :p Edit: Although I see ICD is part of OCD so.... shush :o

Nope, it's psychological. Reading the Wikipedia link, it's kind of amusing that it's akin to kleptomania, gambling and pyromania :D I wonder if we could explore that further in your piracy-for-the-sake-of-piracy habits? :D (I'm just messing witchoo, promise, but it's an interesting thing to consider :o)

I did it as a kid (between 5-12) but grew out of it. Occasionally if a nail splits I'll bite the sharp bit off if I can't get to a pair of clippers otherwise it'd annoy the hell out of me but even that gives me chills (I hate the feeling, like nails on chalkboard).

Also, out of curiosity... Do you spit or swallow? :erm:

I did the the other day, broke a long nail (for guitar) and nibbled them all off as I didn't have a clipper handy. Can't stand jagged broken nails.

O.o'

So what do you have after you chew 'em? I don't see them being er... neat :erm:

Neater than when a long nail snaps off. It's my slight OCD that causes me to chew the rest off, as I can't have a broken nail, can't have one short nail, would rather have 5 uniformly short nails, if even not as tidy as when snipped with a clipper, which I didn't have with me at the time.

I'd rather have four neat 'long' nails and one short assaulted one than a hand full of assaulted ones >.>

I'd find a nail clipper before the day is out, even if I have to buy a new one or use a pair of kitchen scissors. I WILL HAVE SYMMETRY!

No, never.

I have tried for a couple of minutes to see what it was about. Dropped it like a bad habit.

the sound that nails make on a chalk board I am not bothered by.

chew your nails infront of me & i'll slap your hand out of your mouth.

it is a  disgusting habit. unless you scrub your nails FIRST there are plenty of germs under there.

i normally cut my nails once they're somewhere between 1 & 1.5cm. but then again I have naturally hard/resilliant nails that don't require much maintenance between cuttings.

I only cut them then coz they end up annoying me.

I do

It's such a bad habit, even if I try not to bite them once my mind is somewhere else like watching a movie or studying then before I know it I'm biting them again.

It's actually very difficult to break the habit and I should go look for that gross tasting stuff you put on your nails to help.

Although I do make myself feel better by saying it's better than smoking/drinking out of habit.

So you have nails that are protruding at least 1cm from the tip of your finger???

Wow, sexy!!!

Actually not really. I can bet you your nails have more germs under them than mine do. Especially if you keep them 1cm long which I find more gross.

yes unless they've been cut (a week ago).

it's too much effort to soak them more often. if they are not soft I can break those small nail clippers on them . . .

Edit:
I cut them probably every 4 months.

actually I find it easier to keep longer nails clean than if they're short.

I have never bitten my nails, so they don't go in my mouth.

I am a woman, why should I have short nails permanently?
