I generally carry every day everywhere even to church.

Same, only places I don't carry are the places with metal detectors (home affairs, etc) and on the Gautrain (because I found out that is actually a criminal offense, not just a right of admission thing).

Nope. I suffer from depression. Smart enough to know that it is not a good idea to own one.

I have a good security system at home, we have armed response cars patrolling our neighborhood every day (the owner of a security company lives on my street, and most people on the neighberhood safety group pay a small monthly fee for these patrols), we're subscribed to our neighberhood safety group(headed by the owner of the security company), I have a knobkierie by the bed, my wife has a tazer by her bed(and pepper spray in her handbag) I trained in karate, taekwondo & kickboxing for nearly 30 years, my wife also did kickboxing for 3 years and there was heavy focus on self defence in the women's classes, and we have an emergency response plan at home. I make a point of it to not go out after dark, and I actively avoid "dangerous" areas.

I do like shooting, but have first hand experience in the dangers of having a firearm at home, and some people shouldn't own firearms, but they do.

When I was 9 years old, I visited a friend at his home. He wanted to show me his father's hunting rifle. He knew where his father hid the safe key. He took out the rifle, fiddled with it, and it went off. The bullet hit the wall about 30cm from where I stood. His father's office was across the street from their house, he was in the room before my ears stopped ringing.

In std 9, I played in an action cricket tournament. After finishing a game, a couple of us slipped out of the building to smoke. In order not to get seen by teachers or parents, we hid between some cars in the parking lot. A trigger happy a-hole fired a shot at us, destroying some poor sap's car window. He thought we were trying to steal a car. Luckily some parents and teachers stormed out upon hearing the gunshot and convinced the guy that we were schoolkids playing action cricket. The cops took the guy away. Turns out he was drunk, as well as armed.

My boss at my first job's son (highschool kid) committied suicide with my boss's gun. I still have contact with my old boss. He still blames himself 25 years later.

My one friend was shot and killed by his ex-wife's new husband. He rocked up at their house drunk and angry. The house was locked, and he was outside. There was no reason to shoot him. The police, or a family member or so, could have been called.

And, lastly, my one neighbour in a previous town I lived in shot two burglars in his house. His court case lasted years and cost him a fortune. And the state prosecutors tried hard to nail him.

It is a choice and i fully agree some people shouldnt have them but equally there are plenty who shouldnt have a drivers licence and car either. I survived here over 30 odd years without a gun and if crime wasnt so rampant and becoming worse each day i still wouldnt have one. Unfortunately security and police would take far too long to be of any use. Your last paragraph is my biggest concern but the reality is its you or them. We just have to do our best to survive.

I don't have one, for the only reason is if I buy one it will be going the same as all the other stuff I do, completely over the top
I would start with a small handgun for EDC and then next I know I will be saving for a walk in gunsafe
