I’d go to a gun shop and make contact and tell them you want to start the process and do they know of a legally armed rep or local person who can giuide annd assist. You can also get advice about what you need it for and hold a few different models.

After SAPS approve your proficiency you will apply for a license for a gun so you should own one by then. The store will keep it for you until that is also approved. Check storage fees.

But most importantly. Start now. It goes quick enough. Search Internet for legally armed guy in your area and get going.

As mentioned you do proficiency training first. Then competency with saps. Then the license with saps.

Fyi you can buy a can without any of the above, you just can't take it home until its licenced in your name

Yes, but its not just gunshops that do training. Lots of places only do training.

my 2c, when you do the training, bite the "bullet" and do the training for all catagories

Handgun
Shotgun
Rifle
Self Loading

Its a bit more expensive but it is worth it. Also apply for all 4 with your competency application

Honestly, I’m banging on about Legally Armed but I’m not affiliated in any way, they just made things so easy. There should be one close by.

I'm literally off for the Thursday club shoot.

Need those 6 points for this year.
 
I've also considered the idea of getting sports shooting license instead, for home defence I like the idea of a shotgun, but would also want to EDC.

Can't have both with self defence license.

I'm just not in the mood to argue with a cop on why I'm EDC'ing with a sports shooting FA.

And trying to conceal carry a shotgun on S13 might be a tad difficult

Ja... At the time i just couldnt spare the extra bit of money so i only did handgun..I also thought realistically that I would only ever have a use for a pistol anyway as that would always be with me.
