Do you pay a deposit?

Many of those hundred are actually clear scams. Selling at unbelieavble prices behind Whatapp business (fake) accounts. Only on-line and you have to pay in full before delivery.
Yet someone wanting you to pay a holding deposit on a fridge that won't be available until the end of the month doesn't scream scam?

Buying a fridge is actually pretty easy.

Do you know the seller? Have you met her so you can make a character assessment?

Ideally the default position is to trust someone who has not given you any reason to doubt her integrity.

If she wants say a 30% deposit, and all else seems good, why not start by offering her a 20-25% deposit. Provided of course you fully intend to bring your side of the bargain and actually pitch up to collect and pay the balance on the agreed date.

Life is too precious to squander on a perpetual distrust and skepticism about other people. In my experience, most people are good and will honour their word. You should make sure you do the same.

PS. Hope it's a good price for a good fridge.

Oh yah, and yours is guaranteed not to be a scam?

Doesnt matter, Its a fridge not a porsche 992 GT3 RS. Surely its not that rare.
I am also relocating and need a new fridge as the one I have is too big (this I need to sell before I move). So time is becoimg tight

I was inclined to take this stance before I read all the comments posted here :). I do not know her. Will be viewing the fridge on Monday. I will parley then.

It is a fair price

Pay 50% deposit but then demand 50% of the fridge...
^ sounds stupid, but at least it's not as stupid as you paying the money and getting scammed....

So answer is HELL NO!
DOH!

Don't. Just get one of the other 1000 fridges that are available.

I've never understood why people get so fixated or entitled over secondhand goods or property, or the amount of time they waste pondering over a "good deal".

Then get another fridge. Something else is wrong here.
Choices can easily become few and far between if a particular make, size, colour, bottom freezer and water-dispenser are all pre-requisites. Add to this how far away and the need to avoid sellers (private only) in un-safe locations and not very communicative about what they are offering.

Let it go. It's not worth it. Go sleep. Go for a walk or run tomorrow morning and clear your mind. This is a mental problem you have and has nothing to do with someone else's used fridge.

You said you want this particular style/model/whatever of fridge, the current owner will be chucking at some point why can’t a gentleman’s handshake ie. both parties word just stand?

That’s how it was done in the ye olde days (I believe).

The deal is/will be mutually beneficial to both parties.

PS: Please tell me it’s a Porsche Design fridge :p

Normally I would just bide my time and wait for something else to come along but with all the other things I have to sort out in the move I would rather the fridge was out of the way asap.

There are many buying and selling frauds. Cannot trust anyone. In this case Seller has a fridge to sell. She is relocating. Can only handover the fridge end Feb. It’s needed until this time (understandable). She wants a deposit to show that I am serious and that I will not just leave her in a lurch on her last day. She will have no time to then sell.

Do I pay the deposit? If I don’t and wait until end Feb it may be sold already. If I pay, what if she just disappears or sells the fridge to someone else (and does not refund me) or claims I never paid. Maybe she was not really relocating and it was all a ruse.

Escrow? Would this work?

I intend to see the fridge first.
No, you must learn to overcome your (brainwashed) urge to buy immediately(patience), the stuff won't run away, and if so better for you, the risk is there today, Word of Mouth is dead mostly.

Agreed, but there is a risk for the seller that is not nrmal, i.e. she has to sell before she relocates and this is her way to manage the perceived risk
