You take your car to Melville?

Not so much anymore, but I used to visit a Bangladeshi joint in Melville that made some good biryani and that meant dealing with the lollies. It was also close to my previous place of work and we'd occasionally go for a drink or two after work in the before times (before Covid), when the bar vibes were still good and not too many shootings and muggings were happening. Still had to deal with the lollies, but at least you weren't getting shot at or mugged outside every bar.

My absolute pet hates:

1) When they want to help me push my trolley and pack my groceries - do I look disabled
2) When they greet you in quick succession until you acknowledge them, even when you are talking to someone else - "hello sir, hello sir, hi sir, hello"
3) When they say "everything is fine" when you return - why wouldn't it be?
4) When they run around flapping their wings trying to help you reverse - I have a F'ing license, I can reverse, I have a rear-view camera, get the F out of my way
5) When they pretend they found you the parking bay with the pointing-finger gesture, even though there are plenty spots or in fact I actually spotted it before him

But yes, when I have coins, I tip the annoying buggers :)

F0kol.
The more you guys pay them, the more of them plagues every shopping mall. I get beyond pissed off. I have not given them a cent in years. What I do these days is, when they greet me (their way of trying to acknowledge I now have to pay them). I greet them back. They always follow with the old "ill watch it nicly". I give them a thumbs up. When I get back they will show me my car as if they now did me a massive one. I then again give them the thumbs up. I then get in my car, as I reverse out I will open my window to initiate the payment. And then give them the thumbs up as I drive off , No arguments, no nothing.
That's more than enough payment in my opinion.

When I have change, which is about never these days.

Usually prefer R5. I will sometimes go R10 if that's all I have, but def. not more. They often get R1 because that's all I have.

No, I don't feel they offer any service.

If someone wants to steal your car they will take it, if there is a car guard or not.

BUT why actively encourage behavior where they actually assist the thieves in pointing out that they should take YOUR car because you don't give them a R2 coin

most people don't mind giving interpark or some other useless company R10 per hour to do nothing but paint lines on the floor demarcating a deliberately too small space for you leave your car in, but you dont want to pay a car guard - so you can't actually cry wolf when things happen to you - i have had these guys come and help me when actual crooks came to mug me as i was walking to my car at a local Spar (the car guard came over and told these morons to leave me alone and chased them off ....... granted he did scream for the other car guards to come help but all of them did)

I try not too because they are mostly just beggars with reflective bibs on and take zero responsibility for watching your vehicle other than madly gesticulating when you arrive and leave.

Don’t need to be told where or how to park, and if a thief wants my car a sunburnt tannie in a hi-vis isn’t going to do much to stop him. So, no.

Used to when they first popped up because they’d help unpack trollies, etc, and also take the trolly away for you when done. But then they just resorted to begging without providing any service whatsoever.

Also, I pay a siht load in insurance each month in case it gets stolen. They are MORE than welcome to steal my 10 year old car as it will mean I get a new car. Regardless, I drive a C class, I have been told its impossible for them to steal it unless they load it on a flatbed. No one is going to go though that trouble for an old piece of junk.

Well I have bought food and stuff for some especially if I get the idea they need it

But in general I do not have cash on me
