DoC study highlights expensive local telecoms services

Well it's a step in the right direction if you ask me. Usually they just denied everything or gave excuses ("there is no crisis"). This study was straight forward and showed that there is a problem, so now the DoC will hopefully do something about it.

Yes, but how many steps in the right direction is it going to take? We have been hearing, "step in the right direction" for years now and we are still stuck with this BS.

There is no need to step in the right direction when you are literally running into large sums of money right NOW. The only way for this to be beat is if some offshore ATnT type company bribes ICASA *im sure its insanely easy*, and steps into the market with a mass consumption model.

Recognising the problem is one thing (and it's actually common knowledge) but doing something about it is quite another. Otherwise it all just becomes a load of hot air. :(

Im sure the "meetings" that Telkom holds annually with the DoC heads have not taken place yet, they merely published those figures as an invite for their handout from big telecoms here in SA.

Makes me too angry to even want to assume thats all that this little stunt was, but TIA, its probably the case.

Queue the bribe money!

Or we hook up Seacom to the WUG in Durban and somehow connect it using lcoal only bandwidth to the rest of the country. Charge each user R300 per month for internet access or something.

Cant do that, anything to do with internet providing needs to be green lit by filters set in place, those filters will either 1) deny you, or 2) accept your deposit of x amount and let you though.

Look, the truth is the people who give go-aheads in telecommunication have zero mental involvement in IT, but a 100 percent unyielding commitment to black BMWs and X6s.

Like most (all?) of the current government institutions they only really interested in the next under the table deal which benefit their pockets most. Screw health care, screw education. Broad band? Can I steal it? Nah!
End of story.

Surely a study was not needed.
And now that they have the results; What do they intend doing with it?
+1
Why do we have to keep comparing ourselves to others to realise things are bad. Why can we not just for once think for ourselves in this country of ours. Why can the government not just for once set the international benchmarks?

Hmmmm...

Do they take the unemployment rate into account when researching stuff like this?
If, according to some, the unofficial unemployment rate here is as high as 40%, then 60% of the adult working population make up the figures quoted... not the whole population of the country. This will change the figures then yes?

Yes.

Also need to consider "economically active"...

How many more studies do they need to tell us we have expensive bandwidth in SA.

We all know this - just hurry up and fix it!!!

but we keep forgetting about South Africa's "unique" geographical location

haha, i think we'd have cheaper adsl if we were on the moon...

Next steps:
Appoint a consultant to study the results of the study.
Have public hearings about it.
Then do another study.
Declare that a drop in broadband prices will be 'imminent'.

LOL :D

well there has been many studies.. our isp's just know they can milk us.. cause we have no where else to go

Why?

Why have a story like this. Something we already know. I'm not saying that there shouldn't have been a story, just that it is pointless in this place. So what if we have the worst broadband, so what if our calls are priced the highest. So What????? We don't have a choice, we all need the services and we have no other option, so why would the industry players care? Answer: they wouldn't and clearly don't.
I suppose this just creates an opportunity for us to vent.
so there, I'm finished vented.

I think the way they do this is that every year they have to do a study just to check the pulse on broadband in South Africa... Yep, its still dead... Good, see you next year Mr Joe Public. Oh, and that will be R5 million for the consultation

*1 Year Later*

Right Mr Joe Public, according to our last assessment on you, you weren't doing to well. Lets see how you doing this year... *Snap of Surgical Glove*...

Right, still dead *scratch on toilet paper* ... The bill is in the mail, see you next year Mr Joe Public...

*1 Year Later*

...

ROFL @ Ron Burgundy!

General consensus is : Wast of money, we demand a refund, paid by the people who commissioned the study.
