Doctors are killing it

And what do you think Architects do?

Draw with crayons and covered by UIF?

(sorry, not frustrated with you. This place is pathetic.)
No - im agreeing with you. People don't appreciate the true cost of professional services.

I paid my 15k for my plans to be redrawn after the previous owner didn't submit..

Glorified vet in town charged me R450 to renew a prescription he left with his receptionist. I told him he can shove it where the sun doesn't shine and pay a proctologist to remove it. Second and last time he gets the time of day from me. Bastid!

R600 for 15 minutes. Fully booked the whole day. R15-R20 000 a day?

Doctor us currently on a yacht trip in the Bahamas though. Will be back in 2 weeks.

Let's don't mention lawyers charging R2000+ an hour. Even the time they spent on the loo.

Estate Agents..... Let's don't even talk about those snakes....

And yet people doesn't even want to pay R10 000 for municipal approval drawings for a R4 000 000 house.

Something seriously wrong with this place.

There's an old story that goes something like this:

A giant ship’s engine failed. The ship’s owners tried one ‘professional’ after another but none of them could figure out how to fix the broken engine.

Then they brought in a man who had been fixing ships since he was young.
He carried a large bag of tools with him and when he arrived immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship’s owners were there watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away and the engine was fixed!!!

A week later, the owners received an invoice from the old man for $10,000.

What?! the owners exclaimed. “He hardly did anything..!!!”.

So they wrote to the man; “Please send us an itemised invoice.”

The man sent an invoice that read:

Tapping with a hammer………………….. $2.00

Knowing where to tap…………………….. $9,998.00

Effort is important but experience and knowing where to direct that effort makes all the difference.

You're paying for their knowledge and expertise; not their time.

Hmph, I'm annoyed this morning as Mrs. Kosmik has been sick for the last month and back now third time to the doc. He's referred her for x-rays of her lungs ( note network GP and network hospital ) and she's gone. Medical aid says they won't pay as it doesnt fall into the GP portion or the hospital portion without admittance. I mean she is sick enough that she has to go for a x-ray as part of diagnostics, that should be covered in some way, even a basic pmb as its problem to breath.

M/A would rather pay for a hospital stay, or let the condition worsen, utter stupidity, neh Discovery.

I guess for a normal GP that might be high. I am unsure of their general overheads and cost of practice setup.
My ophthalmologist and I used to be friends (played sport together) and he only really started to make money into his very late 30's / early 40's.
13 years of studying and then an investment into a shared practice, the machines were ludicrously expensive, and he said with the access to information, everyone wants the latest tech (which is fair), so they constantly have to refresh the machines.
For sure he is well off now, but its not an easy road for some of these specialists and the running costs of his shared practice was hectic. They had to borrow a large amount of money to setup and the interest was brutal.

He mentioned the costs of constantly studying, conferences etc was not trivial either.

Matt Fitzpatrick played 269 golf shots last week and got paid about R4.5 mil. He charges R16 728 per shot. It took him aboit 20 hours of playing time, so he charges R225 000 per hour. Doctors, architects and lawyers are cheap. :p

So why does one not pay for an Architects or Draughtsman's knowledge or time?
It is all about supply and demand. An experienced Oracle DBA can charge up to R1500 per hour - even more than the doctor charges.

To be fair, it is not just South Africa. You read about this in basically every country. It is staggering what is happening globally.

Having a sickly child means I've seen many doctors and specialists in my time. All drive fancy sports cars and go on dream holidays because they make bank. This is simply because they are in private practice and are able to charge that premium because there's so few of them so you can't really blame them for exploiting the system... is the South African way!

The real problem is that there is a bottleneck at universities to train young doctors and because of BEE quotas, many prospective doctors are also turned away. Figure a way to get more doctors trained and out into the working world and we get more competition.

So why does one not pay for an Architects or Draughtsman's knowledge or time?

Could be supply and demand or if the general professional community has agreed to certain prices then thats what it is.

If you're on discovery medical aid, have you heard of their new wellth story? It's like a free consultation.

For some specialties, insurance alone is approaching 100k/month
Simply opt out, that's what politicians do. Blissfully unaware.

Oh, and while we're on the topic, do "traditional doctors" also have these types of insurance cover, or are they subject to livestock and weather damage only?
