Hi Guys,

Hoping someone can help me diagnose a friends router issues. Here's the scenario:

He has 2x TPLink WR840N routers, one upstairs and one downstairs, connected via Powerline adaptor.

Everything works fine but every couple of hours, he is unable to access the internet from the upstairs PC 2. When things aren't working he can ping from PC2 to the Downstairs router (configured as the default gateway) but he is unable to ping 1.1.1.1 (destination network unreachable) or google.co.za (could not find host).

PC1 however has no issues and can ping 1.1.1.1 and google.co.za

Restarting the Downstairs router fixes the issue and PC2 can suddenly access the internet for a couple of hours until the same problem crops up again.

What could be causing this?

Is there anything in the logs from either of the routers when this happpens?

Sounds like the upstairs router loses its connection to the downstairs one - could be caused by the powerline OR it gets kicked off the subnet (expiring DHCP lease?)

Without logs it will be difficult to start to pinpoint

Do a traceroute and make sure you get the downstairs router in the reply. That will tell you if the downstairs router is definitely where the issue lies.

Make sure upstairs router has its DHCP turned off, might be doing a DHCP refresh and getting an address from the upstairs router rather than the downstairs one.

Have you tried giving the upstairs PC a static IP, that's an easy check.
