Does Afrihost have support?

Last night I bought a cloud hosting server from afrihost. I tried to configure it, but messed up. It went down. It hasn't come up since.

On every single vps/cloud hosting company that I have had a server with in the past, they give you the option to reconfigure the host to a scratch install. For example you can choose ubuntu or centos or fedora or whatever you want, and it will wipe the current install and put that OS on. I even once register a vps on what turned out to be a 16 year old kid in the UK's website. Even he had that functionality.

I can't find that function on afrihost. So i logged a ticket for them to do it. Apparently they have 24/7 support, but they still haven't done this. What is worse is that when I call in, it tells me to hold on that I am first in line. But nobody ever answers. At least telkom has the decency to tell you when they aren't staffing their call centers after hours.

What to do? Is there a better vps/cloud host in South Africa?

I want to migrate my international servers here, but I don't want to have constant trouble.

Finally got through to them.

They won't be able to reset the server to it's default settings until monday.

What a joke. For a company that prides itself on customer service, and has the word "host" in their name..

This is the most basic feature in the world...

Not sure what price range you are looking at, but Mweb's VPS worked pretty well for us. Only ever had downtime when their DCs went down for maintenance, which wasn't that often.

I think I am just going back to Hetzner in germany.

You get everything at a fraction of the price, and you don't have to work with incompetent people.

I have now cancelled my afrihost service, after using it for 1 hour, and having it offline for 12 hours. Due to the fact that I fall within some technical debiting window, I will now be debited R280 * 2 = R560 for using the VPS for 1 hour.

Their response is that it is "out of their hands".

I am so pissed off at myself at giving afrihost another chance. They did this to me in the past as well, where I was billed for three months after buying an adsl account at R500 and immediately cancelling it (effectively making it a 30 day account).

You can't go wrong with Hetzner.
I'm assuming you're looking at their German hosting due to the cheaper price?

Yes the German hosting is cheaper. I am also quite a fan of their local hosting, but it is out of my price range. I will probably go for it once my needs increase.

You should really check out Rackspace. Their cloud portfolio includes virtual servers with a control panel that allows you to reset your VPS, resize it, change OS, etc, but also through an API. Not only that - you can pop a new VPS, configure it to your taste, take a snapshot, and then pop more servers based on that image. They offer a host of supportive products too - DNS, mail, CDN, load balancing for cloud servers, all configurable through APIs.

I've only used the cloud servers, cloud files (CDN) and load balancer service so far, but I'm pretty happy with it.

I've used rackspace and amazon extensively.

That is why using afrihost is such a shock. I cancelled my account, but they still wanted to know if they could reset my server.

They said it could take up to 48 hours.

48 hours.

Do they need to mail CentOS on floppies from the US or what? Why is this not a client-side feature. I have used over 10 different virtual hosting companies in the last two years, maybe more. Each and every one of them had the feature to reset the server on their control panels.

They should not provide hosting. Stick to ADSL.

Amateurs...

lol holy ****. try elitehost.co.za they not cloud but they offer decent VPS with all the options you need

BTW, Afrihost is a hosting company that went the ADSL route. They've been doing hosting for way way way longer than they have done ADSL

I like Afrihost, but their support is a real joke. I think they make Telkom's support line look good.
Always message Afriman if you have issues !
