I have a friend at work who uses the same coffee cup every day and only washes it every few months.

When I queried it he said that because the water is boiling it kills any bacteria so it's fine.

Is it fine? I mean I'm not the most hygienic person but to only wash your cup every few months is kinda iffy.

It's not the most hygenic, I had a friend do the same, they are still alive :-). Theory kind of works.
What he didn't know is I washed his cup a few times for him.

The boiling water doesn't touch the entire rim of the cup, the place that he puts his mouth.... I doubt he will get sick but still...

That's why we don't have to jab for every new germ showing it's pointy head. We're used to them.

Depends whether he uses milk and sugar?

I have a mug I reuse for black coffee and frankly I think it's probably safer than the soap residue on a freshly washed cup. Nothing in black coffee really to go bad.

If anything it's probably got a bit of an antimicrobial effect. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10942910701675928

Wouldn't do it if there was milk involved though. (Above article notwithstanding.)

My coffee leaves a very dark stain and if frothed even that is quite a heavy residual, rinse mine at least every cup and it gets fully washed daily. Once or twice maybe ( but I'd still give it a quick rinse first ). Less often than that, nah.

Well, it's like everything. There's degrees.

If he has a prion like mad cow disease on there, boiling it for 27 years wont kill it.

If he has covid particles on there, rinse with boiling water will kill that ****er no problem.

No, bacteria leave behind toxic compounds even after they are killed, some have heat resistant outer layers that require a longer time to kill, and also as the others have mentioned, what about the outer rim?

By the way, if this guy is the only person to use this mug, get over yourself and don't be a Karen. Leave him the **** alone.
