To me they are because humans can help themselves generally, they have the power to.
Animals have no power to help themselves and rely on us, Humans to help them when they are in need. They have no voice.
These are my personal feelings.

I am so relieved the doggie was saved. Heard about this on radio on Friday while driving .... just imagine how scared it must have been trapped in there for days. Shame :cry:

I'm very glad they were able to save him. Now let's hope he'll get a good home.

Yeah, tell that to Zuma as he wastes more than that a day on all his wives. But I presume Zuma equates the poor humans beings in need in this country to be less important than most compassionate humans felt for the dog. :p

What do you think the chances are this is just a chancer look for his 5 minutes in the spotlight? I mean, no word from him before or during the entire incident and then he suddenly rocks up afterwards after his dog has been gone 6 or 7 days?
 
Rescued dog gets new owner

A man who rescued a dog that fell into the Big Hole in Kimberley, has adopted her, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said on Saturday.

SPCA inspector Marius van der Westhuizen said the dog's owner Chris Baadjies signed the dog over to them.

"[John] Seeley has formally adopted the dog that he rescued," said Van der Westhuizen.

The dog was rescued by Seeley last week.

ER24's Christo Venter said the dog had been in the hole for a couple of days.

"The dog had been swimming around in an attempt to find a way out and fortunately found a ledge to rest at, which probably saved him..." he said.

According to Wikipedia, the Big Hole is an open-pit and underground mine in Kimberley. It is believed to be the largest hole excavated by hand.

The Big Hole has a surface of 17 hectares and is 463 metres wide.

It was excavated to a depth of 240m, but then partially infilled with debris which reduced its depth to about 215m.

It has accumulated water to a depth of 40m.
