Don't drink too much Gaviscon

The pain can get excruciating.. I normally get really bad lower back pain that radiates outwards towards the kidneys.. normally as a result of GERD.

I used to be a chronic heartburn sufferer -like after eating anything I used to get it. Used to live off of concoctions of antacids, nexium, eno's, gaviscon and rennies.
I then changed my diet, quit alcohol and cigarettes and lost some weight in the process. Haven't had heartburn since. Like not even once. Been over a year now and going strong.

May I make a suggestion, even though you guys normally ignore my advice? I agree that antiacids do not actually solve the problem of digestion, heartburn etc. For a natural alternative, get some activated charcoal capsules at Dischem. Not too pricy and it actually absorbs excess acid. they use the stuff to soak up poisons or radioactive material ingested.
My husband swears by it.
Your poo may be darker, but it is essentially harmless.

I have this also. But mainly use it for when I am feeling a bit bloated etc.

For some reason the only thing that works for me is bicarb. Gaviscon, Rennies, etc. bring no relief.

I am not sure if using bicarb on a regular basis is good for one, but since I lost a few kg's since New Year I seldom get heartburn.

Will you be able to get these at any pharmacy?
Also is there a specific brand or name to ask for ?

Are you largely overweight or what? I only have ever had heartburn regularly when I was carrying around an extra 10kg.

I am quite a bit overweight, busy working on it.
I have had this problem since I can remember, even before I ballooned.

Been to various doctors and specialists, and they all say that the op would be the only solution, apparently there are a couple of things that only that can fix.

So until then, I am dependent on medication..

So I made this mistake,
I have a bit of flu that started on Monday, for some reason I have terrible that came with it. Coffin just makes it worse and I can't sleep, so I took some gaviscon sachets, two if them 'cause my heartburn was very bad and I needed some sleep, it worked very well and kept on taking a sachet every time the heartburn became too much.
Yesterday I felt some pain in my stomach like some sort of cramp, not to bad but was not normal?
Last night My heartburn was very bad again during the early mornings and took another two sachet like the other night just to get some sleep in.
At around 4 this morning I was awoken by such a pain never felt, like I was winded, so it hit me like all medicine there must be like a little sheet, so I grabbed the box, found the sheet and in bold Large amounts of intake may cause abdominal distension
This sucks, it is so uncomfortable.

There's another reason as well....

Extended use over some years may cause calcified kidney stones.
The base ingredient in most of these ant-acids is calcium carbonate.
And too much of that in your system makes it's way into other organs.
When it ends up in your kidneys it forms a hard calcium stone that will eventually have to be passed.

And when it decides to pass at 1 am in the morning... you will feel like you are giving birth to a strand of barbed wire.
Trust me... I know this from personal experience.

Where can I get some of this ?
And how much is it ?

Nexium. Brilliant stuff.
But at R600.00 for 28 tablets a bit pricey.

You can also try Altosec, a lot cheaper and also works good.

Get the generic. Takes off a 0 off that figure.

That kind of worries me...:erm:
Well I have drank about 2lt of water since this morning, the pain in my stomach is better, but a pain in my mid back is really bad, hard to move, like a dagger is lodged in there.

I know that pain all to well... you will find that if you are able to burp, that the pain will lessen. It's caused by gas buildup. Would recommend drinking something carbonated or having some eno's (note though that this is just based on my experience.. I am not a doctor and if the pain persists, you should rather seem medical advice)

....get yourself a some calcium magnesium at the pharmacy...powder form...two tea spoons in a glass of water...takes on the acidity issue y...while also giving your body a boost in the magnesium department...

You beat me too it...I was the same. Ate Rennies etc. 24/7. Stopped smoking, lost 15kg's and also stopped eating anything containing fine wheat/flour/yeast etc. like white bread, white rusks. muffins etc.

Now I get heartburn maybe twice a year when I indulge or eat something "wrong". It is unhealthy to just try and cure the symptoms instead of the cause.

If it is a kidney stone.... it will get a LOT worse! :D

I can recommend RaniHexel150 for heartburn. (Generic is called Ultak150 and works exactly the same at a fraction of the cost). Over the counter so no prescription is needed.

Struggled with heartburn for years. Then discovered these.

1 pill every 2 or 3 days took it away completely.
