An easier way would be to add a wildcard DNS record. It would just catch anything that doesn't match the www and forward it on to the www sub-domain. Combined with the .htaccess accepting it.

Or you can do it properly and create an A record to your website and point the www record there. Then in IIS/Apache add a header for it ...

This is very common with SA sites. Most international sites you can drop the www part. Annoying.

Sometimes an A record isn't enough. With Apache you'd need to configure the .htaccess file to redirect it to the www subdomain or the httpd.conf file to accept *.domain.com.
With Cherokee it would be the cherokee.conf, you'd setup a wildcard in the VHOST records.

In my dns templates I create an A record to the hostname, then I create a CNAME www record pointing at the hostname.

www or not.. Makes no difference.. So easy just set both anyway.

It's just easier to start typing the site name rather then the www first.. Those 3 extra characters add up when you are typing URL's over time..

I noticed this a long time ago with the UCT website.

It's stupid since you don't even need to be tech savvy to make the change. I googled it a few years back, to use in a few websites, and all I had to add to the htaccess file was one or two lines. I think the issue with those webmasters is that they have the mentality of "If it ain't broken, don't fix it". And the higher-ups probably think that any change with their websites will be too expensive to do.

Whatever the case, I'll go have a talk with a few of the ICTS staff at UCT and see what they have to say.

What's even funnier is when leaving out the www gets you the iis welcome page ROFL.

Can be done in cpanel within like a minute, none of this 5/2 minute nonsense :p
Just a simple radio button one needs to select and presto!

I always type the www anyway... force of habit.

My fingers feel fine.

5 minutes worth of work. Seriously, idiots.

I seriously doubt the reason it's not enabled is due to laziness, just good old ignorance is far likelier. Which is worse actually because it's such a simple thing and to not know about it implies there's a ton of other things that haven't been done.
