I found this and wanted to share it with you guys!

So I build a new Windows XP ISO with SP3 integrated, this is a Volume License editions (VOL) which only accepts Volume License Keys (VLK). When I want to install it on a clean machine, I noticed that setup prompts for a product key and it does not allow me to continue, which should be a new feature in XP sp3. OK so I fill in the VLK but it does not accept it, I try another one from a customer of mine, does not work either. Angry

I found out that the problem is when you do the XP Sp3 slipstream process on a WIndows Vista machine, the API gives a different response and screws up the PID process. This is a bug and Microsoft knew about this in December, still the bug remained and made it all the way to RTM, nice work Microsoft.

So XP SP slipstream only on XP or 2003 machines!!!

does slipstreaming involve copying system files from the running system to what you want to slipstream? if not it makes absolutely no sense why you can't from a Vista machine.

I dont think they expected people to downgrade.

but if you have moved to linux then what's the problem? why use M$ at all?

Its not a personal thing this issue, I am merely discussing how I can not believe a bug likes this exists. It looks dodge

no offence and and I don't want to start the m$ vs linux debate....but if XP sp3 is installed and working great...why bother with linux ..especially because its so difficult to use:p

all M$ products are dodgy.

dodgy coding covered by glitzy eyecandy....

...and Linux products aren't difficult to use - just require a learning curve to learn new methods and ways of doing the same thing.

dude - ALL software has bugs.

M$ products are so widely used that more bugs are bound to be found vs lets say a not so widely used software application.

And them not fixing this bug makes perfect sense from a business, making money perspective.

I mean really. You have to either be poor or a fool if you have not figured out Vista is fine.

What exactly does slip streaming have to do with depending what os it is run on? It should not make a difference whether the program is run on. Not fixing the bug from a business point of you, good grief. Well I suppose not fixing majoy security flaws would also be a good business practise.

Ah fool if anyone doesn't think Vista is fine, right. Well I guess all the bad press and Microsoft extended the life of XP, proves your point. Everyone except people who use Vista are fools.

One easy method is described here with XP SP3 RC1 as example:

Some more good reading too.

Damn, I slipstreamed SP3 from my Vista machine. I haven't tested it yet, but I'll see if I get the same problem when someone uses it.

i never said that. i said you either have to be poor or a fool if you haven't figured out vista is fine.

or you can believe the press

True, lets agree to disagree:D. Although I use Ubuntu as my main os, I need XP so I virtualise it. Works out quite handy

stokstert - i can't access tinyurl from work. But one process involves "running" the SP against the folder which houses the files you will copy to disc? by my reckoning this stage should expand the files in the SP file and overwrite those in that directory?
