Whats Happening Forum,

Im looking at buying a second hand Double Cab, so far we are interested in the Nissan Hardbody 3000 TD 4x4 or the Isuzu KB300 TDi LX. Both models around the 2004/5 year mark and a ceiling price of R115000.

Im also pretty set on going for diesel.

Please can you share your thoughts on the above bakkies and any other ideas you might have.

Cheers

I was also interested in the Hardbody TD so I asked a frined of mine who works for Nissan. He told me that specific model of diesel Hardbody has a tendency to blow the motor somewhere after a 100 000KM and the only fix is a new motor at a cost of R30 000.

2nd hand 4x4? I'd want to know a hell of a lot about the previous owner before I even thought about touching it.

Actually, it doesnt have to be 4x4, the hardest thing it will probably do is Sani Pass :)

I do not know much about bakkies, however hubby bought a 2008 Mazda BT50 4x2 3.0 common rail diesel double cab a while back. It is really nice, seats are comfy, ride as well. It drives easy it appears to be higher than most other makes at that year model. That year might be above the ceiling price you mention. He is really happy with it.

But maybe have a look, there seem to be a few on Gumtree for around the R115,000 mark you are looking at in the years you mentioned.

Hilux 3.0 KZ-TE?

If you can get your hands on one of these, then go for it..

They're damn nice, but they're like Hens teeth.. esp the 4x4 version. I have yet to see one sit on a showroom floor for more than a day or two.

I don't get why people buy double cabs. The ride is crap and if you have to sit in the back, it's even worse. Plus the load box is small and it drinks fuel.

i have this irrational need to buy a big vehicle... haven't relented yet but dammit i dont understand it!!

Lots of these on Gumtree, why are they so sort after?

The load box is a whole lot bigger than that of most cars boots. You can also chuck stuff in it you wouldn't dream of doing with your defender/disco/cruiser sw/etc.

The back seat is wonderful for carrying my camera bags, rather than passengers :)

Our case was, having to move stuff around allot that you really do not want on your car seat, however will not fit in the boot of the normal sedan or hatch, so ergo a bakkie. Then we do have passengers along for the ride ever so often, so double cab. Then there is also the added benefit of being able to tow bigger loads and when you want to go camping lots of space to put stuff and when the road is not so well looked after the higher ground clearance really comes in handy even if it is not a 4x4.

The ride quality of the newer bakkies are loads better that the older bakkies and usually double cab is better than long wheel base single cab ones, I might need some correction here, this was my experience test driving some...

Also diesel is usually better than petrol and the fuel consumption these days a comparative to the SUV and really not as bad as you would think.

Hilux 3.0 KZ-TE? on Gumtree?

I only find one....

There will be lots of Hilux's... but its the 3.0 KZ-TE that you want.

Sorry, I was searching the whole of SA, I see there is just one in KZN, again, any reason why the KZ-TE is the boss?

There are quite a few in KZN though, search for KZTE, no "-", again, why is this such a good bukkie?

According to our CPF fortuner/hilux is second most stolen/hijacked vehicle in SA after citi golf.

I think your mate is talking poo. I had one of those and I blew the engine but not because of some common fault but rather because a mechanic forgot to tighten the hose clamp on the radiator hose after a service....and it cost a whack load more than R30k.

I know of many owners and have not heard of this so called tendency.
