Hi guys, perhaps someone knows the true answer to this question, as I've only seen mixed/inconclusive feedback about it on these forums...:

Does Telkom charge a downgrade (or even upgrade) fee when switching line speeds?

A friend of mine here in Welkom has a 384k line. His exchange supports up to 4Mbps and his line conditions could even handle over 10Mbps.

He would like to try out 4Mbps for the rest of the month, and only pay for 4Mbps for this month (probably cancel it for next month).

So also: when would be the best time to cancel so that he isn't charged for two months but that he gets the most of 4Mbps for one month?

Thanks a lot

I think it is pro-rata for the line rental, but you're only allowed to downgrade/upgrade like once per month AFAIK.

Unfortunately I cannot confirm any of this though.

When you upgrade to 4Mbps you are informed about the downgrade fee - I think it was R170 but you would have to confirm with the operator before upgrading.

I've been to the Telkom Shop this morning and the sales guy told me that there are no downgrading fees, except perhaps if you cancel your ADSL subscription OR change your Telkom data contract.

I should be able to verify this within the next month or so, because I've downgraded today from 4Mbps to 1Mbps.

Sounds good! Plz keep us informed & Thanks =)

w.r.t. the ADSL access charge, that will be pro-rated if i am not mistaken, so that doesnt matter when u do the change. Also, it's quite unpredictable as to when they effect line changes so good thing that they do it pro-rata. i.e. they will tell u allow for 2 days to downgrade, but u could find the change happening within an hour. U just never know with Telkom...

The guy at Telkom told me that my line would be "downgraded by tomorrow", but it was in fact downgraded like within 2 hours.
The other day when I phoned 0800 375 375 and asked for my line speed to be changed from 2Mbps to 4Mbps, it was changed while I was on the call...

The Telkom charges are pro-rata.

I will keep an eye out if they billed me for downgrading.

Pada, u upgraded recently from 2mb to 4mb and now u've downgraded down to 1mb? 2 different lines or was 4mb not performing properly?

@ryan411
I had 384kbps from like beginning Feb - end of March, and then I upgraded to 4Mbps.

Then from the beginning of June, my ADSL dropped every 5minutes & 45 seconds. After about 2 weeks, a Telkom technician came to my flat and said that my SNR margin was too low, so he asked that it should be downgraded to 2Mbps. I of course told him that it wouldn't make any difference, and it didn't.
Like a few days later, after I found out that a few other people in Stellenbosch had the exact same problem, the problem just disappeared on the one day.

So like a week ago, a day after the ADSL problem was fixed, I phoned Telkom again to ask to change my profile to 4Mbps again.

And now that Mweb has that 6 month contract where you can get 2 months for free, I decided to go for 1Mbps uncapped, instead of like 30GB local only + another 10GB local only.

... and that is my story as to why I changed my ADSL speed so much :D

They usually do charge a downgrade fee but they have not been for the last year or so. A Telkom rep did confirm this and said it was a "special" but he could not confirm if they would start charging again or if it was going to be a permanent free service.
