Dr Beetroot gets new liver

Did Ariel Sharon who is obese and very old not get rather extensive life saving treatment to keep him alive after suffering a massive stroke that turned him into a veg ???.

Well I guess him being the Prime Minister at the time had nothing to do with the treatment plan from the doctors :).
 
Steyn explained yesterday that the minister was put on the list for a liver transplant as an anonymous patient.

She said the minister was really ill before the transplant operation and she easily could have died.

"Everyone (hospitals and other donor points) knew that there was a patient in critical need of a donor liver and that, if possible, she should be the first in line for assistance.

So if 10 people in one province is on the waiting list, and 3 of them is on the brink of death. Which one do you choose?

First on the list, best medical, youngest.

IMO all waiting for livers is/could die.

True but would another citizen not have gotten similar treatment? At least one who could afford to pay for it? Organ's are different because they're by definition in short supply.
 
Some more food for thought:

Dr Elmi Muller, a liver transplant surgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, said auto-immune hepatitis usually affected women aged between 15 and 40.

She found it very strange that a 66-year-old woman had been diagnosed with the disease.

"This disease is usually treated with medication. Transplants are only indicated for a few patients, and then are done at an early stage of the disease," she said.

"Why, then, was the transplant needed now?" she asked.

Muller said older people normally suffered liver disease because of alcoholism, chronic hepatitis C - which is rare in South Africa - or liver cancer.

She said that on the general waiting list the oldest patient was 55.

Manto was placed on the waiting list at presumably 21st spot for elective surgery. She was bumped to number 1. Why does this sound like bull****?

Probably because it is bull****.

I'd love to know how you can compare Ariel Sharon's situation to Manto.. He didn't require any donor organs nor affect any waiting queue's.. You're right he did recieve extensive life saving teatment, as most people in that situation do..

Oh and politics of other countries have little to do with politics in SA in this situation..

Organ transplantation is *very* dependent on tissue compatibility, and therefore the 'luck of the draw' as mentioned above. You can wait for years and never get a suitable donor, or be placed on the waiting list and get one hours later. It often happens, and is very sad to see.

For much the same reason autoimmune hepatitis (if that was the cause of the failure) does not necessarily recur after transplant (although it may). Also, these patients are always placed on immunosuppressing drugs afterwards.

Never mind the numerous blood transfusions and the time spent in operating theatres with their top surgeons involved ... the point is that he definitely was not treated like a normal citizen.

i know its harsh but still the irony that is surrounding her current situation, she has an over active immune system and she makes the final decisions that affect millions of people who have an underactive or ineffective immune systems.

also a tad curios how a 70yr woman gets an organ transplant? if that organ only matched her tissue then good for her, but if there were other people who had a tissue match and they were younger and they got bumped off the list because of certain political reasons, then i think some people should get into a rather deep amount of the smelly stuff that fertilizers plants

The biggest difference is that Sharon's team never denied he was ill, never denied he was getting the best care in a private hospital. The ANC have lied about the unHealthy Minister's condition from day 1. We can therefor easily come to the conclusion that they may be lying again.

doubt you would sing the same tune if one of your family/close friends etc. were on that waiting list <and they were a good match>
