Drivers locked up

R1000 fine. R200 "admin fee" to get the nice officer to open the cell door. :D

The other thing is, you'll need a lawyer to represent you in court, as this is where all of these people are going to end up in. That is going to cost you R5000 easy.

Well, I bet those that were locked up will think 900,000,000,000,000 times before doing it again, and that's the point is it not?

And, if it was my sister i'd be lolling myself till i have no tears left.

And, no, you don't need a lawyer, talk to the prosecutor beforehand and come to an agreement and move on.

Wouldn't a normal fine have had the same effect?

I love it to bits!

The one lady says: "Only one ticket and now they lock me up like a criminal." Priceless!

People die on our roads. Because everybody ignore basic traffic regulations.
How many times have I heard "I didn't see him." after a accident?

Cute ladies that just ignore arrows on the road and then politely gives you a middle finger if you hoot at her. All are minor infractions but make stealing a little thing make you less of a criminal than stealing millions?

Forget about the taxis and all the other stories about raping and being fed like monkeys. Follow the rules and you wont end up there.

I am sure you all noticed where known cameras are situated only the unknowing are speeding. So, go traffic go! Spoil these self centered criminals days.

I wouldn't want to take a chance going to court without a lawyer. What if one of these people was attacked or raped in prison after being arrested?

You obviously have more faith in the cops than I do. People get fined for the most arbitrary things.

Well on the one hand I agree with locking up traffic offenders (watch it Gothan, you will be sitting with your @ss in a comfy jail cell soon, making friends with a guy called Bubba), but the thing that makes this whole exercise a joke, is taxi drivers, they do what they want, and they get away with murder (literally)

AFAIK he is out of the Centurion cells (released just after they released me) :D

I didn't read about any taxi's getting pulled over in this case. I can't imagine that every taxi played by the rules, but then again, they always know about roadblocks and things like this beforehand in some way.

And what if the heavens fall.

Don't do crime if you cant do the time.

Cut the commercials about all the what ifs.

Obey the traffic rules. Nobody is going to pity you or even listening to your whining if caught.

Everybody bitches about the recklessness of drivers. Arrest them! If it is your sister, tell her not to do it again. My bet is for the next few months she will think twice before accelerating to get through a yellow light at the last second, thus allowing four, five, six cars to turn right safely.

When i was living in joburg I always got livid when some a$ did this, it's about high time people started obeying the traffic laws.
Lock them up I say.

If it was really an emergency he would have put on his hazzards.

I would agree with you on this one. Crime fighting aside, there are lots of drivers who think they own the road and disobey the traffic rules.

the other day I almost hit someone cos he turned on a red light (he treated the red light as a stop sign) during the day. I hooted at him, he slowed down and pulled a zap at me basically saying that he is right...

Taxis should be treated the same as well tho...they're the worst.

Ok but then why go after these people and not the hardened criminals, shouldn't those be the real targets? Its not like we're living in Scandinavia where our major crime problem is people running red lights.

Syndyre, you are making sweeping statements again.

Sure, there will be rotten apples. It is plain unfair to make out as if it is the norm.

Let us keep on topic. There was a lawyer on site. He could do nothing. These people were legit arrested. They will have their day in court.

Help us and support the authorities to make our roads more safe.

O, why not tell us of the incident, if there is any, when you were illegally arrested or fined. Seems you have lots of experience.

I agree with fining people for offences, I'm just not sure arresting people and locking them up is the right response to this, unless it was serious reckless driving etc.

It just seems like we have a finite amount of cops etc, shouldn't we start by going after the taxis etc. that are the biggest danger? Not to say that other people don't drive badly because they do and they should be fined/charged for it, arresting them just seems like an overreaction, particularly considering the state of SA jails.

My biggest complaint is that they seem to go after the easy targets they can make money off of, rather than the people causing the most problems like the taxis.

And I've never been arrested and I've only got a couple of fines and I paid them without complaint. I'm not one of the psycho drivers that runs red lights etc. :D

Another what if.

With your feeble argument should we stop going after housebreaks and just concentrate on murders? And which is worse, murder or rape. With your argument which of the two, murder or rape, should be left out that the other could be solved.

Just think for one second and then make your paper consuming statements.
The police are following your daily criminal. The metro police or traffic police do traffic violations. They have different jobs, which in this case the traffic cops were doing their's in a magnificent way.

Or are you suggesting the traffic guys should go and find murderers?

Come on:o

Again I never said they shouldn't go after them I just said that I thought arresting them was a bit extreme and that if they are going to go after people they should go after the worst offenders like taxis, not exclusively but in addition to these people. I'm not the only one that thinks the cops go after easy targets. If there's a finite amount of resources available it only seems logical to use them to the greatest effect and go after the worst offenders.

They've been pulling this stunt for some time now. One of the insurance company already sent out emails twice about this.

They also set up roadblocks to do this, but only in the more affluent areas where everyone has a permanent address.

Perhaps, but the point is that punishment (Meeting Bubba) is totally disproportionate with the crime. I'm sure executing people for speeding would also reduce speeding.

Following the rules is not that easy. They started repainting the lines round here without bothering to match the lines with the Signs. One of the T-Junctions here could be interpreted as a Stop, Yield or full throttle depending on what you look at. So am I supposed to go to jail just because I can't figure out wtf I'm supposed to do there?

This arresting is nothing more than blatant legal harassment. All it is is to cause as much hassles as possible. Totally ruining your whole day because you decided to take a short cut and ignoring traffic regulations. Show me a driver who has never done that and I will show you a lier.

What usually happens is a cop pulls you over. He writes you a ticket after you told him to hurry up. You think whatever. This Rxxx.xx is less than a good night on the town. Millions get ignored. Hear these dapper souls complaining that their sacred time were wasted. Bet you they will think twice next time.

I love it. Go traffic go!

What if someone steals a loaf of bread? Or swipe a wallet here and there, are they not supposed to go to jail?

As for your saying that following the rules is not easy, well that is just silly. :D Pay attention to street signs, or maybe you are one of those that bought their licences.

Exactly, should blatant harassment be legal? If you really want to solve this problem then introduce a point system so if people get too many fines they get their licence suspended.
