Driving with headlights on

I have no issue with someone expecting me to move over to the left on a multi-lane highway. I have a big issue with people expecting me to move over into the yellow emergency lane on a single-lane road so that they can overtake me.

For reference, it is legal to drive in the emergency lane, between sunrise and sunset, if you can see far enough ahead to determine its safe for you to be there while being overtaken. However, you do not have to move over in this case as you are already in the left most lane.

Why does almost every thread with road rules end up with someone having to explain that it is legal to flash your lights to get some one to move out of the right lane on the highway? :wtf:

Because we live in South Africa where 80% of the road users think that they can create their "own" rules and get away with it.

Please give us a link to that, as that sounds totally ludicrous! The Yellowline section is for emergency use only - driving down that section is totally illegal.

Yes Master :p Note this only applies to single lane roads, which is the situation I replied to. I call the shoulder on single lane roads the emergency lane, possibly not technically correct but it should be obvious since there is no emergency lane on the right on a single lane road (like there would be on a highway).

298A. Prohibition on driving on shoulder of public road, except in certain circumstances

1) Subject to subregulation (2) and regulation 298(1)(e), no person shall drive a motor vehicle on the shoulder of a public road.

2) Notwithstanding subregulation (1), the driver of a motor vehicle may, during the period between sunrise and sunset, drive such motor vehicle on the shoulder of a public road which is designated for one lane of traffic in each direction
a) while such motor vehicle is being overtaken by another vehicle; and
b) if he or she can do so without endangering himself or herself, other traffic, pedestrians or property on such public road; and
c) if persons and vehicles upon a public road are clearly discernible at a distance of at least 150 metres.

Well, you should have made that clear in the first place - if you read what you originally said, you say it's legal to go hurtling down the yellow lane along with the Taxis and Tow vehicles!

Dont forget the evil bikers!

My wife HAS to switch her car lights on during the day, since it is black and mostly dirty.

You won't believe how frequently people don't see the car when I forget to switch the lights on.

Last time was this Saturday, shopping 1km from my house when a 4x4 changed lanes into me. I had to hoot to avoid the accident.

If you have this happen to you weekly.. you will realise that people don't take note of your car and you have no alternative.

On my motorcycle I use the high beam during the day. Because, same reason, I'm selfish about my life like that.

:erm:

That not because your car is black or dirty. It's because he didn't check his blind spot.

If you can't see my car with my lights off in bright daylight, what chance in hell do you have to see it with the lights on?

I don't believe that seemingly intelligent people can ask a question like this?

I don't believe that seemingly intelligent people can not understand the difference between being visible, and being noticed.

/pokes the sleeping beast :D
